Prospects for PDP-Congress tie-up in J&K are bleak
11/25/2015 12:38:18 AM
Can it be treated as a possible political development when former Chief Minister,Omar Abdullah, predicts a tie-up between the PDP and the Congress for forming a new Government in Jammu and Kashmir ?Or is it simply a wishful thinking on the part of Omar Abdullah ? Well judged by the current political situation in the country and in Jammu and Kashmir whatever Omar has stated can be his wishful thinking or it can be possible for PDP to snap ties with BJP.Opposition NC leader Omar has said he would not be surprised if PDP ended its alliance with BJP and formed a Government in coalition with Congress and independent MLAs in J&K. In fact, NC spokesperson Junaid Mattu had posed the question to Omar, seeking his opinion on rumours about PDP forming a new Government in alliance with the Congress after snapping ties with the BJP.
Omar has responded to Mattu's question by saying that he would not feel surprised if Mufti Mohammad Sayeed snapped ties with the BJP and formed Government in alliance with Congress, which has 12 MLAs,and with the help of some independent MLAs.
In all the Mufti,if at all,he decided to snap ties with BJP and form government in alliance with Congress he would need the support of four MLAs for gaining majority in the lower House. Will independent MLAs,including Sajjad Lone, agree to support the new formation or the coalition? Nothing can be said with certainty. If PDP decides to join hands with Congress for forming the coalition government, will NC support it in case the Mufti falls short of a couple of seats? Seeking support or joining hands with NC would be the PDP leadership's last option. In fact, soon after the last assembly election results were declared, NC had announced support of its 15 MLAs to Mufti Sayeed for the formation of a coalition government. The Mufti had ignored the offer. He had also ignored the offer from Ghulam Nabi Azad who had floated the idea of forming a government of grand alliance meaning thereby that the PDP-led government would have the support and participation of Congress and NC.
Only one main political development may motivate Mufti Sayeed to part company with the BJP.The growing resentment of people against the BJP led NDA Government in various parts of the country in general and J&K in particular. In such a case, the Mufti would not like to lose the support of people from the Kashmir valley and Jammu region where BJP has been on a down the hill journey. If Mufti Sayeed embraced BJP over eight months ago he had done so to ensure alround development of J&K. Realising that there was BJP led NDA government the Mufti knew it well that by joining hands with BJP he could ensure release of lucrative financial package. Recently Prime Minister Narendra Modi had sanctioned Rs 80,000 cr for various projects, which included compensation for the flood affected people.Hence Mufti Sayeed has no compelling reason for snapping ties with the BJP because he knows it well that as long as the BJP is in power at the Centre, it would not allow J&K to starve for want of funds. In that case Omar's fears may remain unfounded and one may not be wrong if one treats his prediction on a new tie-up between PDP and Congress simply his wishful thinking.
Well one may not be wrong if one believes that Omar was simply trying to widen the wedge between PDP and BJP so that J&K was in for a major political and constitutional breakdown warranting imposition of Governor's rule to be followed by fresh Assembly elections. Any move to hold fresh elections may suit NC and Congress.
Well if not anything else Omar's prediction seems to be a bit premature in the light of PDP's assertion that reconciliation, resolution and development are its core agenda and for this it needs financial and political support from the Centre.
