10 killed, four injured in tragic fire incident at Dhalwas

Ramban, Jan 1: In a tragic incident fire which broke out in a temporary barrack claimed ten lives while four others sustained burn injuries at Dhalwas near Nashri last midnight. Meanwhile labourers union took out a rally at Udhampur and demanded ex gratia to the next of kin of deceased.
According to the reports, nine persons were charred to death in a fire which broke out in pre-fabricated shed while one of the injured identified as Rakesh Kumar son of Sita Ram of Khanpur, (HP).succumbed to his injuries in Sher-E-Kashmir Emergency Hospital, Batote.
"The deceased persons were mostly the labourers, drivers or security guards working at the Chenani-Nashri Tunnel and the employees of M/s Savronik System India and M/s Beg Construction Company (BCC) engaged in the excavation work for the said tunnel.
The fire flames were reportedly so strong that several fire tenders of Fire & Emergency Services (F&ES) led by Deputy Director, Mohd Quasim Bajran were impressed into the service had to face tough times to douse the flames and it took one hour of hectic struggle to extinguish the fire.
"Besides, the kitchen mess of the workers which is adjacent to the burnt shed," they said, adding that the incident indicates company apparently has failed to install any sort of fire safety system which is necessary as to protect from such accidents.
They said that soon after the incident police and district administration officials rushed to spot and started rescue operation. Police sources said that the forensic experts were on the spot to ascertain the cause of fire.
"As per sources, the nine dead bodies were lying in the mortuary of District Hospital (DH) Ramban while one is kept at the Sher-E-Kashmir Emergency Hospital, Batote.
The officials maintained that they will exhume these bodies when the DNA report come and hand over it to the families of the deceased persons.
One lucky survivor who escaped from the inferno Security Guard, Rajinder Kumar, "Six 12 bore guns including 5 single barrel and one double barrel along with sixty cartridges were also burnt in the blaze."
Police sources quoting labourers said that the other inmates of the damaged shed reportedly missing and suspected to have been among the victims have been identified as Irfan Latif s/o Abdul Latif of Thathri, Doda, Desraj s/o Amarnath of Thathri, Doda, Ishtiaq Ahmed s/o Amiruddin Bhat of Banihal, Sheikh Irfan s/o Najib -ur-Rehman, Rohit Singh s/o Subhash Singh of Mukerian Punjab, Showkat Ali, JCB Operator of Chandigarh, Mohd, Rafi of Thathri, Doda, Nasirudin Shah s/o Rehmatullah of Banihal and Devinder Kumar of Jaganu, Udhampur.
Meanwhile the injured identified as Omkara Singh s/o Faqir Chand of Chill, Ramban,Mohd.Afzal Naik s/o Anayat Hussain of Udhampur, Rais Ahmed s/o Abdul Latief of Namar, Banihal and Mohd Yousuf Beig s/o Banshir Ahmed of Banihal were discharged from the Batote hospital after being hospitalized.
Police sources also added that Police from Chanderkot, Batote and Ramban, personnel from State Disaster Rescue Force (SDRF), troops of 23 Battalion of Rashtriya Rifles (Army), 84 Battalion CRPF, Ramban District Red Cross Society volunteers of QRT and locals jointly carried out the rescue operation. The Sr Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ramban, Randeep Kumar, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Arun Kumar, Deputy Commissioner (DC), Ramban, Bashir Ahmed Dar and Director General, F&ES, RS Sodhi jointly supervised the whole operation.
Meanwhile District Development Commissioner (DDC) Ramban, Bashir Ahmed Dar has initiated magisterial enquiry under Additional Deputy Commissioner, Ramban, Babu Ram. The DDC Ramban also added that ex-gratia shall be released in favour of the dependents of the deceased persons as per the SDRF norms only after their confirmed identity.
However, family of one of the deceased Mohd Rafiq suspected a foul play and while talking to Early Times said that the quarter were accommodating more than hundred workers, but how it is possible that only few were killed and other have got no injuries.
Meantime Youth Labourers Union held a rally at Udhampur under the presidentship of Shakeel Shah in which large number of member of union participated and demanded the compensation to bereaved families and demanded a probe in the matter. The rally started from the Shah Market Udhampur and after passing through different markets it culminated outside the DC Office udhampur.
