Early Times Report

JAMMU, Jan 23: Biting cold and dense fog continued to affect life in Jammu for the fourth consecutive day today. "The foggy weather conditions will prevail for next two more days, bringing no respite from chill," a MeT official here today said. He said conditions will also remain dry till January 27, adding, "mainly cold and dry weather is expected in most parts of the state till January end."
"Presently there is no sign of arrival of western disturbance in the state, which mainly trigger rains. So the weather is likely to remain dry by end of the month," he said.
Meanwhile, in view of prevailing harsh cold conditions, the School Board of Education has changed the school timings. As per an order issued here, the timings of all the schools, including government and private, have been changed from 1000 hrs to 1600 hrs from January 22 to 30. Violators will be dealt strictly, said an order. However, foggy and chilly conditions disrupted road, air and rail traffic. People especially the roadside vendors were seen burning firewood and charcoal to protect themselves from chill while the big business establishments have installed warmers and electric heaters to provide respite to the visitors from the harsh weather. Vehicles moved at snail's pace on the road with headlights and indicators on to avoid any untoward incident due to fog. Air and rail traffic was the worst hit due to mist due to which the Jammu airport and railway platforms witnessed heavy rush of passengers.
Tourists, including the Vaishno Devi pilgrims coming from across the country, faced hardships at the platforms in view of delayed trains and immense cold. "Due to dense fog, the air traffic was affected in the state," said an official adding that the departure and arrival of flights is few hours late from their scheduled timings. The winter capital recorded 5 degrees Celsius minimum temperature last night. As per weatherman, the night temperature will further dip for few days in plains but sun may shine in the hilly belts.
