Early Times Report

Jammu, Jan23 : Dr Farooq Abdullah, son of late Sheikh Abdullah, speaks "Kashmiri Pandits have to realize that nobody is going to come with a begging bowl and say come and stay with us.They have to make the move. Do not wait till the last guns stop firing.Come home! Who are you waiting for?Do not wait. You think Farooq Abdullah will come, hold your hand and take you there."
Farooq Abdullah, father of Omar Abdullah, says "he has asked 3.5 lakh displaced Pandits to forgive and forget so that they can go back to their homes from where they were forced to move out after insurgency erupted in the state in 1990.
"People in Kashmir with open arms want you to come back. We have to start seeking and forgive and forget. If you continue to hold hatred in your heart, you will never be able to create the Kashmir that you want to create of love, affection and getting together. I said 'come for God's sake, but no longer will we have a begging bowl and wait. You have to make the first move'."
During his tenure as Chief Minister from 1996 to 2002, he had gone many times to the Home Ministry and held discussions with Pandits and then Home Minister LK Advani to resettle the people back."All plans are ready and are with the Home Ministry. If they are going to wait till the last gun is silenced, that is not going to happen." Farooq Abdullah brother of Khalida and Suriya has said that with uncertainty looming large over the continuance of PDP-BJP alliance, his party may consider a tie-up with the BJP for government formation if such an offer is received. If such a proposal comes, then NC will call a Working Committee (meeting) and debate over it. If such a situation arises, NC can think over it as we have not closed the doors. Our doors are open, when asked to spell out his party's stand if it gets a proposal from BJP for forming a coalition government in the state which is under Governor's rule
Farooq Abdullah, brother of Sheikh Mustafa Kamal, has said his earlier comments on a possible tie-up with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) saying that his party's working committee would only consider it if such a proposal arrived from the saffron party. "I never said we are going with BJP. I only said our working committee would consider this."
Let us examine his take one on Pandits. Has any Kashmiri Pandit gone to him to tell that if he moved around the camps of displaced people with a begging bowl Pandits will return to Kashmir ? Nobody has done it so far.If Pandits want the last gun to fall silent they are not to be blamed. Why should they return and fall to the guns of militants like those in Nadimarg and Wandhama? Pandits do not want political leaders, including separatists to beg for their return. They simply want restoration of atmosphere which could be conducive for them to return to the valley and not to their ancestral houses which most of them had sold for a song and others had been set on fire and vandalized. If at all atmosphere becames conducive for the return of Pandits to the valley they have to settle in clusters set up by the Government.
In his take one as son of Sheikh Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah seemed to be defiant but in the later take he seems to have made amends when he tells Pandits to forget and forgive without knowing whom should they forgive and what should they forget. If Farooq wants Pandits to forgive the killers of some Pandits that is not possible because most of the killers have been eliminated. And it is not possible for the Pandits to forgive those who forced their exodus to experience trauma and tribulations.
Is it possible for Pandits to forget what happened to their relations in Kashmir and what life they have been living in the plains for the last 26 years ? Certainly not.
But Farooq Abdullah is one leader who has the guts to rectify his statements or sermons. He does not say he has been misquoted. He does not say his statement has been torn out of context and that is the quality of a brave and daring politician.
Let us review his take on alliance with the BJP. Yes,if left to him he would not mind forging an alliance with the BJP for the formation of the Government in Jammu and Kashmir with sole purpose of keeping his political rival, the PDP, out of power. But his son has forced him to rectify his statement. Since Omar had stated that there was no possibility of forging an alliance with the BJP his father had to emulate him failing which the differences between the father and the son could have assumed bigger dimensions.
But credit must be given to Dr Farooq who has the courage to voice his feelings in the open.He has the courage to express feelings which lay in his subconscious level. Other political leaders do not have such a quality. Farooq Abdullah has the guts to tell New Delhi to shut the doors of talks with Pakistan whenever Pakistan trained militants carry out some major terror strike in Jammu and Kashmir. And he has the stamina to voice support to Modi for opening the channels of dialogue with Pakistan. Despite Pathankot air base terror strike Farooq Abdullah wants talks to continue which alone could promote peace in the state,in the region and in South Asia
