Early Times Report

Jammu, May 3: The forest area in Purmandal block has suffered a heavy loss due to felling of trees over the years by the people who take the dead bodies for cremation in Devika.
The dense forests area in the block has now become totally nude and the Forest Department over the years has failed to save the jungles form destruction. The mercilessly felling of trees has become a cause of concern for the residents in this entire belt as they feel that the ecology in entire area will be endangered in case prompt steps were not taken to stop the practice.
Some social organizations from the area have taken up the issue with concerned government agencies from time to time but they failed to seek proper attention of authorities to arrest the trend and save the green gold from destruction.
However the Government did not act with the result the people taking the dead bodies for cremation in Devika at Purmandal were cutting the trees mercilessly due to non availability of the fire wood in the area as Forest Department did not pay any attention to the same over theyears.
However with the continuous intervention of the social organizations from the area Forest Department rose from the deep slumber and issued orders for opening of the fire wood depot at Purmandal near cremation ground for making wood available for cremation of the dead. According to sources the fire wood will be sold for Rs 250 a quintal and this step will go a long way in protecting the forest area in Purmandal from further destruction. The Forest Department which opened the fire wood depot near cremation ground also supplied one truck of wood and the fire wood will be supplied on daily basis.
The people in the area have also demanded plantation of trees in the denuded forest area in Purmandal so that the ecology of the area is saved from being endangered.
These social organizations have also made an appeal to the people cremating the dead bodies near the Devika Shiv temple to avoid this practice and take the bodies to cremation ground for this purpose to maintain the sanctity of holy Devika at Purmandal. The people were also asked not to cut the jungles as fire wood has been made available in the area.
It may be recalled that some social organizations from a long time have launched a campaign in the area against the cremation of dead in Devika near Shiv temple and this campaign had borne fruit as people by and by cooperated and shifted to cremation ground for performing last rites of dead. However some orthodox people were still cremating the dead inside the holy river but people of the area are hopeful that with the availability of the fire wood near Cremation ground this trend will also stop.
