Govt schools in Jammu losing students thick and fast
17% private schools have 50% enrollment

JAMMU, May 4: Enrollment in government schools of Jammu region is showing a fall despite introduction of different schemes including mid- day- meal , free textbooks, uniforms by government for the students.
Sources in education department informed Early Times that in Jammu region there are 14908 schools which include 12226 government schools and 2682 re private schools.
"In these schools, the total students enrolment (Private and Government) is 1325068 in which 17 percent private schools have nearly 50 percent enrolment", sources maintained.
The trend is disturbing in view of the fact that the teachers in government schools are better experienced and qualified than their counter parts in private schools private schools but it was very astoundingly that the enrolment and furthermore, the government has extended lot of welfare schemes for government schools to luree more students.
Official data reveals that in district Jammu there are 932 private schools and 1574 government schools while the enrolment of these schools are 261177 and 96724 respectively.
32053 students have been enrolled in197 private schools of Doda district and 77041 students in 1433 government schools. In District Udhampur1433 government schools have 84708 students enrolled while 201 private schools have 37997 student enrolled.
In District Kishtwar only 84 private schools, having 20492 students enrolled while 832 government schools having 45828 students enrolled.
In district Rajouri 1724 government schools and 302 private schools and their enrolment are106469 and 57878.
District Poonch, 94252 students enrolled in 1512 government schools while 35732 students enrolled in 216 private schools.
In district Reasi64181 students enrolled in 1119 government schools and 15156 students enrolled in 88 private schools.
62956 students enrolled in 809government schools of Ramban district while14778 students enrolled in 82 private schools.
In Kathua district335 privates schools having 68396 students enrolled while 1452 government schools having only 78197 students enrolled.
District Samba have513 government schools having 23499 students enrolled while in 245 private schools having 47554 students enrolled.
Sources further said that shortage of teachers is one of the main reasons behind the growing irrelevance of state run government schools and lack of standard education for which the parents and guardians do not prefer to send their kids to these schools.
"Despite having well qualified teachers and also increase in allocations for education sector, government had shut a large number of primary schools across the state few years back after drop in student enrolment but has done little to improve the education in such schools", sources said.
