jammu, May 6: In what can push National Conference to the brink of political storm, the party claiming to have sound and strong base in the three regions is in for a major setback as some senior leaders from Jammu will soon call it quits and part ways notwithstanding their long association with the party. These leaders including a former minister , ex legislators and senior functionaries are learnt to be quite unhappy with what they been experiencing as 'dictatorial' attitude of the provincial leadership besides an 'unconcerned' party president Omar Abdullah and incoherent high command which are cumulatively making the party fall apart. The setback to the party will come as these leaders have made up their mind to join the Congress which they look upon as politically viable alternative for a host of reasons.
Sources said resentment is brewing among some senior leaders from Jammu region and voices of dissent have already started coming to surface with a couple of leaders resigned formally and few more likely to bid adieu to the party. These leaders are not feeling disgruntled and disappointed without a reason, said the sources adding that the major cause compelling them to part ways is highly dictatorial attitude and way of working by the Provincial leadership which has pushed them to edge within the party despite being quite senior and having served the party for decades. Pertinent to mention is that Taran Jeet Tony, a leader who has held many senior posts with the Jammu Provincial unit has already resigned from NC.
Sources further said that these leaders have been feeling choked and sidelined after emergence of the 'new coterie' whom party president have free hand for the last few years, even during the tenure while party was in power. This absolute freedom and full authority to run the party according to their whims have turned old horses, stalwarts to the brink of obscurity and oblivion, sources said adding that what has compounded their state of inconspicuousness is the disorganized and messy way of handling party affairs by the high command, Omar Abdullah being the man seen as responsible for 'alienated' state these leaders are finding themselves in for a long time. Interestingly, those who are ready to quit the party have been among the leaders who were once very close to Omar Abdullah and on whom the latter not only relied but entrusted key responsibilities in the past.
However, what can actually come as a real jolt to NC high command is that it is going to lose the senior leaders from Jammu region as they will join Congress soon, a development that will not just shake but certainly weaken the base of the party in the region. Sources further said that while the leaders have already conveyed and approached 'appropriate' quarters in the Congress, the latter have decided to organize the joining function in a gala manner soon.
