Neeraj Badyal Early Times Report SAMBA, May 20: Some industrial units, set up in phase I and phase II of the Industrial Estate here, are alleged to be polluting the Basantar river waters and the atmosphere of the town. The industrial estate, which operates under the supervision of SIDCO, has almost 250 factories manufacturing different products, including pesticides and other hazardous chemicals. Official sources said though some industrial units had set up ETPs (effluent treatment plants), the waste material of most of them was allegedly flowing into the nearby Basantar river, polluting its waters. The PCB norms were also being flouted, but the officials concerned were not taking any action against the violators, sources alleged. The thick clouds of smoke emanating from the factories were polluting the atmosphere, sources alleged. Locals, who use Basantar water for irrigation, have asked the government to immediate stop the alleged flow of industrial waste into the river. |
