Will BJP replicate Jammu in Assam?
5/20/2016 11:53:38 PM
Early Times Report

JAMMU, May 20: The BJP, in collaboration with its three allies, on Thursday scripted history by wining 86 seats in the 126-member Assam Assembly. The BJP's own tally was 62. It happened for the first time that the BJP scored such a victory in the North-East. The victory of the BJP in Assam has naturally boosted the morale of the BJP, which had only suffered defeats in 2015.
Many factors helped the BJP trounce the Congress, which had been in the driving seats since 2001 without a break. One was the anti-incumbency factor. The other was that the Congress went to the polls almost alone. But the third and the most important factor that motivated the electorate in Assam to vote for the BJP+ was the Bangladeshi factor.
Lakhs and Lakhs of Bangladeshis have illegally entered into Assam and settled there. They have changed the demography of the state with the help of the Congress party. There are more than 30 constituencies where they determine the poll outcome and there are another 20 constituencies where the Muslim electorate also plays an important role. They had become a threat to the very identity of the region and its original inhabitants. It was the fear of extinction among the local population which the BJP exploited to the hilt, with the bulk of Hindu population voting en-block for the BJP. In other words, the factor that had helped the BJP to script history in Jammu province in the 2014 Assembly elections was also the factor that led to the victory of the BJP and its allies in Assam. The BJP had aroused anti-Kashmiri feelings in Jammu region both in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections and the result was its massive defeat. It had won both the Lok Sabha seats and 25 Assembly seats. The people of Jammu voted for the BJP which had promised them moon and held out several promises that it will do this and it will do that in Jammu if voted to power. But after winning the election, the BJP took no time to ditch them and throw in their lot with the intolerant Kashmir and sealed their fate. It surrendered almost everything to Kashmir and excluded Jammu from the power structure in a most brazen manner. In fact, the BJP left the Congress far behind to appease Kashmiris. That's the reason the people of Jammu province hate the BJP and call it a party of "compromises".
"Will the BJP also ditch the Hindus of Assam like it did in Jammu province" is the question the politically awakened people of Jammu are today asking. There are valid reasons when they ask: "Will the ungrateful BJP also replicate Jammu in Assam and abandon the Hindu population there to appease the Bangladeshis for vote bank? Let's see what the BJP ultimately does in Assam. One has to keep his/her fingers crossed for the time being.
