| Sportspersons sweat out at 45 degrees, officers eat into their refreshments? | | Members Sports Council register their dissent | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, May 20: Gross irregularities have come to the fore in procurement of refreshments for the sportspersons, who undergo various training camps organized by the State Sports Council in Jammu, wherein neither the proper codal formalities were followed nor the members of committee constituted to fix the rates, menu and the vendor were taken into confidence by the pompous Sports Officer Jammu.
Though the complaints in this regard were pouring in since long from various quarters, the beans were spilled the previous day when two eminent members of the State Sports Council personally made assessment of the refreshment being issued to the sportspersons during the inaugural of the week long summer coaching camp for young players in selected games at MA Stadium.
Sources divulged to ET that the members pointed out that while the sportspersons were entitled to refreshment worth Rs 100/-, what was actually being offered to them was worth much less. "The members pointed out that the refreshment being offered was worth merely Rs. 60/-. As the members dug into the details of procurement, it came to the fore that not only were the codal formalities forgone, even the members of the committee constituted for the purpose were not taken on board while deciding on the menu and vendor" said an officer of the State Sports Council, who was privy to the incident. . "At least three members of the committee admitted that they were not taken into confidence and the decision was taken arbitrarily by the Sports officer Jammu in total contravention of norms," he added.
Embarrassed to have been caught on the wrong foot, the Sports Officer Jammu created a noisy scene in the presence of members of the Sports Council at MA Stadium and started shouting, impelling the members to leave the venue.
It is pertinent to mention here that Sports Council had started to offer refreshments to the sportspersons attending coaching camps in various games by itself, rather than entrusting the sports associations following complaints that the players were never offered the refreshments. Though the decision of the Sports Council was widely hailed, certain vested interests compromised on quality and quantity of the refreshment for ulterior motives, 'eating' into the refreshment meant for sportspersons who sweat and bleed in the grounds. Many complaints had earlier been received by the Sports Council over the matter and even photographs of undervalued refreshment were circulated to members of the sports council on social media.
Peeved members of the Sports council when contacted said that they shall bring the matter in the notice of The Minister for Sports and the Chief Minister and seek appropriate action. |
