He added that Mufti was more Indian by conviction than anyone else. He in his speech resented Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti skipping second day of 2016-17 budget session when House had assembled to pay tribute to deceased lawmakers including her father.
"Late Mufti was not only CM but father of the current CM who should have cancelled all her engagements and attended today's obituary reference," Rashid added.
In his tributes, MLA Bashir Ahmad Dar, who represents Kupwara constituency, credited late Mufti Mohammad Sayeed for "getting PC close to BJP and PDP". "There were differences," he said in his reference, "but when we met Mufti sahab, we understood each other and it was because of his vision that we came into the fold (national politics)."
As Dar was speaking and detailing how PC joined government, he was continuously ridiculed by Opposition lawmakers from NC and Congress. "Mufti wanted to bridge the gaps, get hearts closer and it will happen only when we meet, interact and understand each other," Dar added.
Congress MLA from Inderwal G M Saroori also paid rich tributes to all the deceased lawmakers. The house burst into laughter when Saroori referred Choudhary Lal Mohammad Sabir as Lal Singh.. He soon corrected himself and addressed the Forest Minister, "Aap ki Umar Bad Gaye" (Your life span increased). "Despite offering myself for the job, the busy schedule of Mufti didn't allow him to fulfil it. I am deeply saddened that one of Kashmir's sterling and exciting stories had remained untold," he said. He said that Mufti Sayeed justified his decision of alliance with BJP despite against the popular mandate added that he is hopeful that the decision of Late Mufti Sayeed will prove right like the one taken in 1969 by him.
"At a time when majority of people in Kashmir and Jammu voted for different parties, Mufti ensured that the aspirations of people from both regions are respected," he added.
Akhtar said that Sayeed made democracy "competitive" in the state. "Earlier we had no options but after Mufti Sayeed came to the scene, he presented before the people another option to express their faith with," said Akhtar.
