Early Times Report
Jammu, July 28: The firebrand minister of district Kathua, who remains in news for varied reasons has reportedly, forgot his own constituency, which is still waiting for macadamized roads, bridges on rivulets and other development activities, after lapse of more than 69 years of independence.
The first heavy rainfall was enough to expose the condition of Minister's constituency, where five teachers had a close shave, when flash floods caught them unaware and a driver-conductor and some villagers fortunately rescued them in panchayat Hatli.
Sources informed that employees posted in Higher Secondary School Hatli, hundreds of students, employees of other departments had to walk several miles and cross seasonal rivulets on foot due to no roads in the area.
On Wednesday evening five teachers of Higher Secondary School Hatli were returning home and were crossing a rivulet in village Hote, when flash floods washed them away. "A Matador driver and conductor, waiting on other side of rivulet for passengers and some male teachers, jumped in their rescue and fortunately save them all but belongings of female teachers shoes, mobile phones beside others were washed away", Principal of School Jaimal Singh said.
He further said that a major tragedy was averted yesterday. "Teachers as well as children have to cross rivulets and walk for hours to reach the school. Even I myself returned in the evening from school with the help of villagers due to flood in rivulets", he said.
Aware of the yesterday incident, Sarpanch of village, Ramesh Chander says that people of nearly 13-14 panchayats, including Hote, Thun, Sola, Hatli have to walk on serpentine tracks for hours together, due to no roads there. "Development is still miles away from these panchayats and people risk their lives to reach their destinations during every rainy season and during summers there is potable water crisis", he said.
Though a major tragedy was averted in panchayat Hatli but Education department officials were found still in deep slumber and even the district administration was not informed by them for taking the issue seriously.
ZEO Lakhanpur, Dalip Dhar admitted that there were problems during rains and teachers have to risk their lives to reach the school. "There are general instructions to teachers to wait for flood water to recede", he said.
On being asked if any step is taken by CEO office after the incident, ZEO said that he would soon write to CEO office about the matter.
CEO Kathua didn't pick up his phone, despite repeated calls but more surprisingly, he had so far not informed the District administration about the issue.
ADC Kathua, Dr. Bharat Bhushan feigned ignorance about the matter as Education department officials had not informed him so far. "Standard Operation Procedure (SOP) are already in place, but I will soon get information from the CEO and will apprise DC about the issue", he said.
