Dozens sustain injuries as protesters clash with police, security forces across Kashmir

SRINAGAR, July 29: Dozens of persons including police and security forces personnel sustained injuries as groups of agitated youth clashed with forces at scores of places across Kashmir valley. Forces opened fire at some places in order to bring the situation under control.
Reports said that at least four persons including two minors sustained serious injuries after police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel opened fire on a group of people who were protesting at Gushi in North Kashmir frontier district of Kupwara. The injured persons were rushed to a local hospital. However, as their situation was serious the injured to Srinagar for treatment.
Trouble broke out in the area after groups of agitated people especially youth clashed with police and CRPF personnel immediately after the Friday prayers. The protesters registered their anger over the civilian killings that have taken place following the death of Hizbul Mujahideen Commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani along with two of his associates at Bemdoora-Kokernag in Anantnag district on July 8.
Reports said that four civilians sustained injuries during protests in the Trehgam area of this North Kashmir district. Two more persons were injured in the Kuligam-Lolab area of the same district. The persons who sustained injuries at Trehgam and Kuligam are being treated at Kupwara hospital. Protests were also reported from Lalpora, Regipora, Hatmulla, Kawari, Nagri, Vadhpora and Kralpora areas of the district.
Two youth sustained injuries after protesters clashed with security forces at Delina in Baramulla district. Reports of clashes have also come from Hajin, Kaloosa and Ajar in Bandipora district. Some of the protesters sustained injuries during the clashes in Bandipora district. Protests erupted in Palhallan after the culmination of Friday prayers. Hundreds of youth got engaged in ding-dong battles with forces.
Reports said that at least three youth sustained bullet injuries after police and CRPF personnel opened fire on a group of protesters at Shopian in South Kashmir. The three persons who sustained injuries were part of a procession that was protesting against the civilian killings after the Friday prayers. The injured were shifted to Srinagar for treatment and their condition is stated to be stable.
Intense clashes broke out in the South Kashmir's Dooru area. Reports said that people tried to take out a march after Friday prayers but they were stopped by forces. Later the youth and forces got engaged in ding-dong battles with stones being used by former and tear gassing by the latter. Clashes also took place in Sangam, Naina, Sirigufwara, Bijbehara, Keegam, Kakapora, Tahab and Chowdrigund in South Kashmir.
Protesters also set ablaze a go-down of Animal Husbandry Department at Shirmal-Shopian. Hundreds of protesters also attacked 62 RR.army camp at Chowdrigund. Protesters also attacked a police station Keller in South Kashmir. Police used tear smoke shells and aerial firing to disperse the protesters.
In Srinagar, police and CRPF personnel used force and lobbed teargas shells on a group of people who tried to march towards the United Nations Military Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) at Sonwar office. A group of people immediately after offering the Friday prayers tried to march towards UNMOGIP but action from the forces prevented them in doing so.
Similar protests and clashes occurred near the city centre Lal Chowk. Protests also took place in the Habba Kadal, Peerbagh, Hyderpora, Rawalpora, Nowgam, Wanbal and Rangreth areas. At least three persons were injured after forces use pellet guns to disperse the protesters at Rangreth. The injured were shifted to hospital.
At the same time authorities imposed curfew in Srinagar, Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian and Pulwama districts in order to foil the 'Jamia Masjid Chalo' call given by the separatists. Curfew was also imposed in Baramulla town, Pattan, Kunzer and Sopore town in North Kashmir. Separatist leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq were arrested as they tried to break the police cordon and head towards the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar. Both of them were released later on. Elsewhere, the life was affected due to the strike call given by the separatists.
A police spokesman said that the situation throughout Kashmir remained under control although there were about 70 incidents of stone pelting across the valley. The spokesman said that miscreants attacked a number of police and security establishments and camps in the valley.
"Militants lobbed a grenade on the police and CRPF personnel deployed for law and order duty at Shopian. Grenade was later-on defused by the bomb disposal squad. At Rohama-Rafiabad, a government building was set on fire. The deployments exercised maximum restraint in-spite of such serious provocations," said the spokesman.
The spokesman said that eight civilians and 46 police as well as security forces personnel were injured during the today's incidents. He said as precautionary measure curfew/restrictions were put in place in the sensitive towns and areas to maintain law and order. "Miscreants had placed obstructions on Beerwah road near Hardapanzu to stop movement of traffic this evening. A motor cyclist identified as Abdul Ahad Ganie resident of Kunru rammed into the obstruction. He and his son Kamran got injured. Ganie succumbed to his injuries at a hospital," said the spokesman.
