Jammu, Sept 30: With an aim to retain the girl child in secondary schools, Government of India (GoI) had sanctioned four girls hostels for district Doda but surprisingly, the School Education department has not started construction of the hostels to this day.
"last year the department indentified land for construction of four 100 bedded girls' hostels at City Middle School (Doda), Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) Bhella, GHSS Jakyas and GHSS Kastigarh at an estimate cost of Rs. 9.24 crore under centrally sponsored scheme for students of secondary and Higher secondary schools but till date the construction work yet not started", Sources in education department told Early Times.
The main objective of the scheme is to retain the girl child in secondary school so that girl students are not denied the opportunity to continue their study due to distance to school, parents' financial affordability and other connected societal factors.
"At a time when the whole nation is crying out for the safety and protection of the girl child, but interesting previous government of state has not provided a single for thousands of girls students who resided in educationally backward blocks across state", sources said, adding that it was very surprising that the Central Government have been allocated funds in Eleventh plan for construction of dozens of girls hostels across the state but till date not a single hostel construction was started.
Castigating the callous approach of the education department, the source further said that despite allocation of funds for the construction of hostels, the process of construction of hostels is yet to be executed due to lackadaisical approach of the department concerned.
"Observing drop rate in school level especially in girls' students, the government of India had declared the girls' hostel in most backward area of Jammu and Kashmir, so that the girls' students get the opportunity to complete their secondary education but owing to non seriousness toward girls education", they said.
Lambasting on slow work pace of department concern, they said that so far neither the state government developed Model School nor took up upgradation of high school which is sanctioned by union government under RMSA.
Chief Education Officer (CEO)Doda, he accepted and said that the education department responsibility to identified land for girls hostel and it was done. Construction agency is Public Works Department (PWD) and the department completes the tendering process, hope that within month period their construction work will be commence.
