Jharkhand poll result bring little cheer for Omar
12/25/2009 2:06:23 AM
ABID SHAH NEW DELHI, DEC 24: Omar Abdullah’s Jharkhand electioneering has somehow failed to impress voters with the exception of Daltonganj where Congress candidate Krishnanand Tripathi won the Assembly polls. Omar had toured Palamu Division of Jharkhand on December 9 to seek vote for Congress Party with whose support he became a coalition Chief Minister in Jammu and Kashmir. He visited and addressed an election rally in support of Congress in Daltonganj besides a few other places. Yet unlike Daltonganj, Congress candidates in predominantly Muslim constituencies of Hussainabad and Panki came at fourth and eighth positions respectively despite Omar’s strong plea to the electorate in these Vidhan Sabha areas to vote for Congress. This, indeed, signifies a miscalculation on the part of the Congress regarding Omar’s image as a Muslim friendly face who could woo voters even outside the confines of Jammu and Kashmir. In Hussainabad Congress candidate Kamlesh Kumar Singh not only lost to Sanjay Kumar Singh Yadav of the Rashtriya Janata Dal but also came fourth at ...

Result of hurry on the part of judge, says Tarigami
12/25/2009 2:05:50 AM
Munish Gupta JAMMU, DEC 24: Barring ruling National Conference, almost all other political parties in the state have criticised the Justice S Saghir Ahmad report on Centre-State relations presented to the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah here last evening suggesting restoration of autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir to the extent possible and out-rightly rejecting constitution of delimitation commission in the state. "The working group set up by Prime Minister has vindicated the stand of the NC on grant of autonomy to the state," senior NC leader Mehboob Beg said here on Thursday. In its report, the working group said: "The question of autonomy and its demand by the NC can be examined in t...

In this "forbidden" library; many books are stolen, many are torn, several litter the floor
12/25/2009 2:02:19 AM
By Babhoos JAMMU, Dec 24: The most complete way to block channels of knowledge and information to society is to shut on public the doors of schools, or libraries, or other knowledge providing centres. This is what the Department of Libraries has done to the people of Poonch. The Poonch District Library, housed in an "abandoned" hall of the District Industries Centre (DIC), is in shambles and has become a "forbidden" ground for the knowledge seekers. Many books are missing, several others are torn while hundreds of others litter the floor. It also does not have any place to sit for its members. In the name of furniture, it has three chairs and one table, besides a couple of racks and ...

Abhi Delhi door hai
NC can have a laugh but not the last laugh
12/25/2009 2:00:32 AM
Early Times Report Jammu, Dec 24: Justice Sageer’s report evoked mixed reaction in the state. The separatists simply ignored the recommendations. The peoples democratic party (PDP) took it with a pinch of salt. It said the report was unclear. The National Conference missed no opportunity of scoring a point against their rivals. Jammu Kashmir is a very sensitive issue. The gullible people in India believe that Jammu Kashmir binds them to the Indian union. Therefore, developments in the state are viewed with extreme caution and interest. Scores of states in India are up in arms against New Delhi. Some demand absolute sovereignty and some are unhappy with the system. Granting autonom...

Stage not yet set for "quiet diplomacy"to take off
12/25/2009 1:59:00 AM
EarlyTimes Report Jammu,December 24 :-Where has "quiet diplomacy" gone? Has there been any progress in the proposed parleys between New Delhi and the Kashmiri separatists ?These questions have assumed added interest following reports that the "quiet diplomacy"is yet to take off. When the Union Home Minister,P.C.Chidambaram,announced two months ago that the Government of India was ready to talk to all political parties including those that are on the other side of the mainstream political spectrum the entire state of Jammu and Kashmir was gripped by fresh interest and curiosity over the course these talks will adopt. And the separatists, except for the hardliners, responded positively to...
