The state cabinet which met here last evening approved the appointment of Khandey as Principal Secretary Planning and Development –one of the key departments in the civil administration. The Congress party today decided to field Manmohan Singh Pinka as its candidate for the upcoming election to the post of Mayor for Jammu Municipal Corporation.
The candidature of Pinka was decided through secret ballot proposed by the Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad who was earlier authorised by corporators to nominate a candidate for the post.
The Chief Minister, however, declined to nominate the candidate and insisted that democratic process of ballot be adopted. He said for him all corporators were equal and he would like them to throw up a candidate by casting votes in a democratic way.

Union Minister of state for Home Affairs, Sriprakash Jaiswal, replying to a question in Rajya Sabha today said there has been a decrease in terrorist incidents in Jammu and Kashmir during the last two years.
The number of terrorist incidents in Jammu and Kashmir during the year 2007 was 1092 while the number stood at 1667 for the year 2006. He presented the report of the Jammu and Kashmir Government that stated more than 8.75 lakh tourists visited the State during the last two years.
He also presented the various steps taken by the State Government and security forces, in an endeavour to make the security environment progressively safer for tourists.

With President Pervez Musharraf's fate hanging in balance, Pakistan government today terminated graft cases against PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari shortly after the apex court dismissed three petitions challenging a controversial order granting amnesty to PPP leaders in corruption cases.
The National Accountability Bureau, the anti-corruption body, terminated cases against Zardari and Rehman Malik, the security advisor of slain PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto, immediately after the Supreme Court gave its ruling this morning.
