| AFSPA needed in J&K: Khurshid | | | |

SRINAGAR, June 28: External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid today said Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) was needed in Jammu and Kashmir to protect the lives of soldiers as they are the ones who defend the country.
“This case is not to be decided by me. It is to be taken by the Home Minister, Defence Minister and, of course, the Prime Minister, who will finally take a call,” Mr. Khurshid said.
He added that there was a sense of loss and tragedy, which was not only limited to the civilian population of places where AFSPA was in force.

Jammu, June 28: In connection with the celebrations of 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vavikananda, a function was organized at Sanjeevani Sharda Kendra (SSK) Anandnagar Jammu today in which a large number of people participated.

SRINAGAR, June 29: The annual Amarnath Yatra began today amid tight security, with pilgrims from both Baltal and Pahalgam base camps starting their journey for the 3880-metre-high cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas.
Amidst chants of 'Bam Bam Bole', the first batch of pilgrims started on the arduous 45-km trek from traditional Pahalgam route, and 13-km from Baltal simultaneously, in the wee hours today, official sources said.
Heightened security measures have been put in place for the 55-day Yatra following intelligence inputs that militants might attempt to target the pilgrimage, sources said.

Srinagar, June 28: The Jammu and Kashmir State Vigilance Organisation today produced a challan in the court of special Judge anticorruption here against an official of Agriculture Department for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 6000.
The Challan was produced against Mohammad Ashraf Mir S/o Ghulam Mohammad Mir R/o Gundipora, Pulwama, the then Agriculture Extension Worker, (R-e-Z), Sub Division Kakapora, Pulwama in the Court of Special Judge Anti Corruption Srinagar in case FIR No. 26/2012 P/S-VOK, said the official spokesperson of the SVO.
