PM-Musharraf meet raises hopes for dialogue resumption

September 16, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf met in Havana on Saturday raising hopes for the resumption of the bilateral dialogue process stalled in the wake of the July 11 blasts in Mumbai. The two leaders met on the sidelines of the 14th Non-Aligned Movement Summit, a day after Musharraf said a "historic opportunity" existed for the two sides to "close the chapter of tensions" and that Islamabad was determined to pursue the peace process to settle all outstanding issues, including Kashmir. The two leaders shook hands before going in for talks at the Protocol House near the Convention Centre where the NAM Summit is being held. Dr Singh was assisted by Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma and National Security Adviser M K Narayanan, while Musharraf was aided by Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri. The prime miinister is understood to have raised India's concerns over continuing cross-border terrorism and its adverse impact on bilateral relations. Srinagar, Sep 16 : At least four militants, including Chief Administrator of Lashkar-e-Toiba, were killed in three separate gun battles in Kashmir region, since last 24 hours. A defence spokesman told News Agency of Kashmir that the security forces achieved a major achievement when they gunned down Abu Muhammad Sayeed, Chief Administrator and Financial Controller of LeT, in a gun battle in Nandi Marg area of Kulgam, late last night. Giving details of the encounter, sources said, security forces launched a massive search operation following the specific inputs about the movement of Sayeed in the area. The excat contents of the intercepted conversations have not been officially divulged. However, according to informed sources, despite the talk floated by the Hizbul Mujahideen supremo, Salahuddin, in favour of peace talks, there is suficient evidence with the government of India in conection with the Hizbul Mujahideen's plans to expand its terror operations. Sex scandal: Court to hear case on Sept 25

Chandigarh, September 16, A local court on Saturday fixed September 25 for hearing the Jammu and Kashmir sex racket case, featuring some former ministers and bureaucrats, that has been transferred to a Chandigarh court on Supreme Court's direction. "The hearing in the case will now be taken up by the court on September 25. The bail applications of the accused will also be taken up the same day," CBI's special prosecutor RK Handa said. Sessions Judge BS Mehndiratta, who will preside over the trial, said he needed to go through the case files and fixed September 25, according to Handa and another CBI special prosecutor Rajan Malhotra.
