| Court freezes PHE bank accounts | | Employees' salaries won't be affected: Chief Engineer | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Oct 22 (KNS): After failing to comply with directions of the State High Court, the Public Health Engineering (PHE) department would not be able to disburse salaries in favor of its employees on the eve of the coming Eid as also the department won't be able to clear pending bills of the department's contractors. Sources told KNS that State High Court has issued directions to the Jammu and Kashmir Bank for seizure of the bank accounts of the PHE department after the department failed to comply with the directions of the High Court. The PHE department had purchased land for the Rangil Water Supply from a local resident Ghulam Nabi Mir in lieu of due compensation, however, after taking the possession of the land, full payment was not released in favour of Mir. Subsequently, the seller after failing to get his dues released from the department approached the High Court with the grievance after which the court had issued directions to the department to release the due payment in favour of the seller. In spite of the court directions, the department didn't release payments in favor of the seller, who expired during his struggle. The case was followed by his sons in the Court. Sources told KNS that recently the court again directed the PHE authorities to issue the due to sum to the legal heirs of the seller but it released a mere 5 lac rupees out of the due amount of rupees 50 lac after which the legal heirs again approached the court. Taking the strong exception to non-compliance with the court directions repeatedly, the Court issued directions for the seizure of the bank accounts of the department. While talking to KNS, Chief Engineer PHE Muzaffar Ahmad Lankar, confirmed that the accounts of the department had been frozen on court directions; however, he said that the salaries of the employees would not be affected. "To pay the total pending payment in favour of legal heirs of the land seller is the duty of our department and we're in process to do the needful", replied Lankar to a query. He said that the department is looking for the legal options for restoration of the accounts. Meanwhile, the regular and daily wage employees of the department including various contractors have expressed concern over possibility of non payment of their dues on the eve of Idd. |
