| ET stands vindicated on AFSPA revocation | | | Early Times stand vindicated with the assertion of Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde that Armed Forces Special Forces Powers Act would not be revoked. After reviewing the security situation on his visit to Jammu and Kashmir region, Home Minister Shinde had said: "Time is not ripe of revocation of AFSPA. The Act can't be revoked." 1. -First to report that Act wouldn't be revoked ET had first reported that after the change of guard in Home Ministry, the new incumbent had categorically told the Chief Minister and State Government officials that Act can't be revoked as situation is not conducive. ET was also the first to report that new Army chief Gen Bikarm Singh had also briefed the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in private conversation that Army will not take risk in giving assent to revoking Act even in some parts of the State. General had in fact politely but sternly turned down the request of Omar Abdullah when he had a meeting with him on this visit to Srinagar. It's nearly an year that Omar had said that AFSPA will be revoked from some areas before the Durbar moves from Srinagar. Omar had put all his weight behind this and is fuelling it up to keep flames of his political survival rising assuming that this demand forms the core of sentiment and expression in Kashmir. It's for this reason that he selectively gave interview to national media to build a perception that even though all stake holders including Home Ministry and Defence Ministry were in favour but Army was against it. The fact that he had acknowledged it publicly that the logic of Army for its resistance is not understandable. He was fuelling this fire, first to keep himself politically alive in face of still opposition from PDP but also had some tacit backing of former Union Home Minister P Chidambaram, with whom he had enjoyed special equation. Even Chidambaram couldn't get his way with the security establishment in New Delhi but once he was out, and Shinde a former IPS officer and also former Chief Minister, was in place the doors were closely shut for this demand.. Shinde unlike his predecessor has not only served belt forces, thus knows their sensitivities, but has been in active politics with strong feet in ground for more than 40 years. Chief Minister had earlier said Act will go before the term of his Government but with this statement from Shinde it seems Omar may have to come in for second term also to realize his dream. |
