| Ahead of polls for new state chief uncertainty grips among BJP workers | | Will it be election or selection process.....? | | ET Report
JAMMU, Oct 22: Even as countdown has started for the process of election to the highest post of president in State unit of BJP, the activities within the party have slowed down lately in terms of workers active participation in the routine programmes and meetings. Ahead of election of president uncertainty has begun to grip the workers and cadres as to who would be the new incumbent under whom the 'show' would run for next term.
Sources within the State unit of BJP say that in contrast to the zeal and enthusiasm party workers involve themselves with any activity, the response these days is on ebb. "They are not keen and prompt as they normally remain in associating themselves with the routine or specially convened progra-mmes...though there is over one month to go when State unit would elect president for the next term, the fervor has died down much ahead of the process……", said a leader of BJP, contending that their growing disinterest has started reflecting on many such occasions.
Sources said the main cause of uncertainty and dilemma among a sizable number of workers is their concern over the 'mode' of the election process, which even though being given to understand is a democratic process publicly but as far as the practices seen in the past for such elections to higher posts, it is the 'will and command' of the Central leadership of BJP that runs supreme in deciding the next incumbent. Sources said most of the cadres and even some functionaries who believe in fairness of election process too think instead of following the so called 'democratic' norms, about which the Central leadership swears and takes pride in saying there is inner party democracy for all organizational activities in BJP, would be thrown to winds and the high command would 'impose' a new president for J&K unit .
This apprehension is becoming a cause of not only uncertainty but also a dilemma among the workers in general about the image of the new president and his mode of working for the State unit as its head, sources said adding that what has further added to their fears that president for the next term would be imposed is the fact that intense lobbying has started from various quarters with Central leadership in influencing the right quarters that would eventually determine the final 'choice' for the crucial post. However, why is it only workers who are concerned for the appropriate 'selection or election' of new chief for the State unit is the fact that it is mainly workers who remain contact and command of the president and on whose directions their activities on ground and contact with the masses determines the accountability to public in general and supporters of the party in particular, sources added. |
