| Three statements, three contradictions and J&K's ills | | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 22: Three statements, three perceptions and three contradictions. State CM says time is ripe for AFSPA withdrawal and there should have been more progress on this account so far. Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde says security forces would only be withdrawn after complete peace returns to J&K. State PHE Minister Taj Mohiuddin says J&K cannot run without Central funds for even a day! Interestingly all the three statements were made during one day by the three leaders. While Omar Abdullah's assertion speaks of his political compulsion to please a specific constituency in the Valley, Union Home Minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde has spoken of a national reality which concerns the safety and security of the country where extraneous considerations like appeasing or addressing the separatist sentiment do not exist. The statement made by Chowdhary Taj Mohiuddin clearly states the status of the State's financial affairs. Tourism, Horticulture, Handicrafts, Floriculture and all other so-called vital sectors of the State's economy notwithstanding, the fact is that J&K is completely and totally dependent on Delhi for survival and support. For the last over 60 years successive Governments have come to power in the State, but most of these years the State has been ruled by the NC whether on its own or in alliance with the Congress. The NC has been on the one hand harping on autonomy and self-reliance and on the other hand be it affording three extra LPG cylinders for the people or setting up of infrastructure in various sectors, this party has always bent itself backward for Central assistance. Be it handling the terrorist threat or looking for employment for the lakhs of the State's unemployed young boys and girls, the State has always looked at Delhi for survival. Yet, when it comes to political expediency the NC leaders have slammed Delhi for the State's ills. Some of the senior most NC leaders including Dr. Mustafa Kamaal have been openly questioning Delhi's actions and blaming it for the political mess in the State. It is strange that those NC leaders who have been in power for most of the years should be questioning the basics of State's accession with the country. The CM on his own has clearly and perhaps permanently delinked elections from having anything to do with the people's assertion to stay with the rest of the country. It is surprising that while the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru and India's Foreign Minister, Krishna Menon stated that holding of elections and the successful participation of the people in these was the formal and firm endorsement of accession to India NC leadership should now label elections as an exercise for just Bijli, Pani and Sadak. While Pandit Nehru said at NAM that elections in J&K were ample proof of the people having linked their future with India, Krishna Menon's statement was India's reply to Pakistan in the UN. |
