Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 22: Are the Legislators belonging to ruling as well as opposition political parties "interested" to inflict political injuries to none other than their own respective close confidants aspiring to contest Block Development Council (BDC) election?
And the answer is being perceived as yes.
As reported number of times, in the recent past, by the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah that "it is the Legislators, who do not want Panchayats to be further empowered," there are simmering in the middle level political circles of almost all the political parties with block level leadership including the probable candidates quite critical against the reported approach of their mentors.
Sources in political circles revealed to Early Times that "Though the middle rung leadership is not expressing their anguish publicly but they smell fishy behind the decision of the State Cabinet to postpone the elections".
Furthermore, even Congress stalwart and Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad who was here in Bishnah in a non-political function, in his address had hinted at chances of victory of independent candidates in BDC election. The statement of such a heavyweight politician has not come as a matter of chance but it seems he too have a feed back that sitting legislators including Ministers in coalition are against the projected candidates of their own respective parties.
Ghulam Nabi Azad here on Sunday, while honouring the family members of martyrs who fought militancy, had stated that "It hardly matters whose party members are more in a Halqa or block. We have enough strength and need not to worry. And even if independent candidates have good strength, we should go for according reservation to these categories as per the Act. We should not bother how much our people get elected to these bodies."
"Had it been the reservation issue for SC/ST and women section the only reason then the Government would have ensured the same much before setting the poll process in motion," pointed out a Sarpanch and a probable candidate having its allegiance with ruling National Conference (NC) ally.
He, on the condition of anonymity shared that "Our Chief Minister is right that Legislators are acting as stumbling block and are trying to delay the election to BDC. They may be apprehending that if the chairpersons to BDC are elected, several powers lying with the legislators will stand decentralized and will automatically be placed with the chairpersons. The same has become un-digestible for the Legislators for whom we worked day and night to ensure they win and represent our Constituency."
"Now, as they know, they cannot openly oppose our candidature as contesting candidates, they (Legislators) are playing politics with two targets-either the elections are not held or their blue-eyed fails to win," pointed out another aspiring candidate of BDC polls further adding that "they fear if their own close-confidants win, they may become candidate for Assembly election after two years."
