EARLY TIMES REPORT

Srinagar, Oct 30 : In an effort to persuade the central government to increase the LPG subsidy cap for consumers of the Jammu and Kashmir State, JKPCC President, Prof Saifuddin Soz and Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, Qamar Ali Akhoon will meet the Union Petroleum Minister Veerapa Moily on Wednesday in New Delhi. While speaking to a local news agency here today, both the leaders confirmed that they shall demand to enhance subsidy cap from 6 LPG cylinders for the consumers of the state. "I will meet Mr Moily tomorrow and have already written to the Prime Minister who has told me that the issue is under consideration of the GoI", Soz said.
He warned the central government that if the gas crisis in the state was not addressed, it would put the forests in the state into danger. "If the crisis is not evaded, the forests are in danger as people might turn to them for getting fuel. Union government must take measures for redressing the problem, however, we are trying our best to persuade them", he added. Akhoon also confirmed his meeting with the Union Minister to be held on Wednesday. "Government is serious in resolving the crisis. I will discuss the issue with the Petroleum Minister with the hope to provide relief to people of the state", he added. Pertinently the minister is in New Delhi to attend a conference of Food Minister. Meanwhile, asking State Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Finance Minister Abdur Raheem Rather to explain their positions before the public on LPG issue, Peoples Democratic Party MLA Lolab Advocate Abdul Haq Khan said that Rather in his budget speech had made huge claims about the profits and achievements. "During his budget speech Rather had said that the 4800 crore income tax was received against the targeted 4183 crore", said Khan while talking to KNS. Khan said if the claims are true and correct why cant the government utilize the extra money on LPG subsidy. He said that the government is mingling the things and is making fools of the people of the state. He said that the statement of Rather to cut down the pensions of the old age persons and widows for the LPG subsidy is a cruel joke and it shows his degree of seriousness towards public issues. Referring to the budget speech of Rather, Khan said that his (Rather's) statement contradicts itself when he is talking about the lack of funds for more LPG subsidy. Meanwhile, Minister for Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution, Qamar Ali Akhoon today strongly pleaded to the central government for providing ration quota to J&K state as per the 2011 census. The Minister said this while addressing the Food Minister Conference in New Delhi today. The Minister said being the border state of the country, the ration provided to the state on the basis of 2001 census is not fulfilling the requirement of the J&K as the population of the state has increased manifold. He also pleaded to release the funds for digitization of records of CA&PD for which state government has already formulated IN to IN computerization project. Regarding supply of ration for centrally sponsored welfare schemes, the Minister demanded to continue last year's quota for this year also.
He also said that in J&K there is a dire need to enhance the capacity of ration godowns in the state for which proposal to Central Government for funding has already been submitted.
