| Congress likely to suffer defeat in Gujarat, Himachal | | National Mood | | Rustam Jammu, Oct 30: Notwithstanding some media exposes and the ongoing media campaign against BJP national president Nitin Gadkari, the BJP is likely to retain control over power in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. Gujarat has been under the BJP rule for more than 11 years now. As for Himachal, the BJP had recaptured power in this Himalayan State five years ago unseating the Congress Government. Himachal, like Punjab, seldom elects the party in power. However, the people of Punjab sprung a big surprise in the last Assembly elections by again reposing faith in the Akali Dal-BJP coalition. The Congress had expected a big win in Punjab believing the anti-incumbency factor would help it inflict a crushing defeat on the Akali Dal-BJP coalition Government, but the people of Punjab made the Congress party bite dust. Neither the campaign of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh nor the campaign of AICC president and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi helped the Congress party in any manner. The factors which contributed to the humiliating defeat of the Congress party in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Goa, and even Uttarakhand continue to make the people maintain distance from what is being termed as the most corrupt, insensitive and arrogant and anti-people Congress. (BJP, which was in power in the State, could have recaptured power had it won one seat more than the Congress. Remember, the Congress captured one seat more than the BJP, but could not win the number of seats required for the formation of Government on its own. The Congress formed a coalition Government with the help of the BSP and a few independent MLAs.) Only this month, the BJP snatched from the Congress Tehri-Garwal Lok Sabha seat in Uttarakhand with a huge margin. The BJP defeated none other than the Chief Minister Bahuguna's son. In West Bengal, President Pranab Mukherjee's son won the Lok Sabha seat with a slender margin of nearly 2000 votes. Pranab Mukherjee had won this seat in 2009 with a whopping margin of over 2.5 lakh votes. This victory of the BJP, which had also scored spectacular victories in the Assembly elections in Goa and Punjab, performed reasonably well in Uttarakhand and scored impressive victories in the municipal elections in many States, including UP, Delhi, Punjab, Himachal, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and the virtual defeat of Pranab Mukherjee's son clearly indicate that anti-Congress wave is sweeping the country. If the findings of the just-conducted pre-poll surveys in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh by some credible media houses, including Aaj Tak and CNN/IBN, are any indication, then one can say with confidence that the Congress is out to suffer defeat in both these States and the BJP all set to retain control over the State power. Himachal is going to the polls on November 4 and Gujarat in the second and third week of December. The pre-poll surveys show that the BJP will improve its tally in Gujarat and is likely to capture 128 seats, 11 more than the previous tally. The surveys also show that the BJP is well-placed in Himachal Pradesh. There are still five days left. The BJP would surely make optimum use of this time and mobilize public opinion in its favour. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has already toured the State and addressed at least three very impressive election rallies. Many other senior BJP leaders are also scheduled to visit the State and address election rallies. The fact is that the BJP will put in its all to win the Assembly elections in this Himalayan State. If the BJP again wins Assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal, it will be construed as a major, major defeat of the Congress party. It's no wonder then that the Indian media and political pundits are describing the coming Assembly elections as semi-final. The election results will surely determine the fate of the two national parties - Congress and BJP. |
