| Geelani's proposed agitation evokes critical reaction | | Will he do some rethinking? | | Early Times Report Jammu, Oct 30: With Geelani's proposed agitation evoking critical reaction from various quarters, the octogenarian leader needs to do some re-thinking. But will he? People close to him suggest that the firebrand leader may go ahead with his programme all the same. A trader who commands respect in his community expressed surprise over Geelani's statement in response to Chief Minister's offer of a chopper to have an on the spot assessment on the situation enroute the Holy Cave. According to him, Geelani should have constituted a team from traders, civil society actors and the clergy to do the survey in the chopper. He is worried like his fellow businessmen over the proposed programme. "It serves no purpose", he made clear. He, however, expressed hope over a positive development during an inter-community dialogue in Jammu recently where a joint team of Jammu Chamber of Commerce and its Kashmir Chapter was formed to do the needful before the Hurriyat (G) chairman announced his programme. The students especially those studying in universities outside the State are equally critical of the proposed agitation. Neelofar Qureshi, a Delhi class 9th student in her write up in a local English daily while appreciating Geelani's concern for environmental preservation urged him to refrain from sending wrong signals to the outside world. "With regards to the environmental concerns, Geelani Sahib would have done much better if he approached the issue with more positive demands. If garbage accumulation and unhygienic sanitary conditions plague the yatra, then rather than demanding curbs by seeking to reduce the duration of the yatra or the number of yatris, would it not be a better option to demand that adequate facilities be created to overcome these environmental hazards? Why demand imposition of restrictions on the yatra which may well give an erroneous impression that the people of Kashmir have a negative and confrontational attitude towards people belonging to another faith? Isn't having an accommodative temperament one of the characteristic Kashmiri traits which we are proud of?", she said. |
