| Counterfeit currency racket busted; Xen, JE among 3 arrested | | | Sumit Sharma Jammu, Oct 30: In a major breakthrough Jammu Police today arrested three persons for their alleged involvement in fake currency racket besides recovering of good haul of counterfeit Indian currency. Police claimed to have recovered Rs 65000 fake notes in two separate raids in two capital cities . "Based on tip off, a raid was conducted and one person identified as Manu Karwal son of Ram Nath Butt of Roopnagar was taken into custody for his alleged involvement in pumping fake currency in winter capital,'' police sources said. On his disclosure a police team was rushed to Valley and two more accused were apprehended and brought back to winter capital for further probe in this regard, sources said. The accused have been identified as Executive Engineer (Xen) Manu Karwal son of Ram Nath Butt of Roopnagar and Junior Engineer (JE) Sharifudin Malik son of Ghulam Mohd Malik of Kupwara and Contractor Lal Din son of Nizamudin of Karal presently posted in district Kupwara in Flood Control Department. Police sources further revealing the facts about the case said that fake currency racket was busted after the arrest of Executive Engineer (Xen) Manu Karwal who was arrested after police received information about the fake currency from a bank where he had gone to deposit the amount. They added, accused Xen deposited Rs 50,000 fake currency to Axis bank situated in Samadhiyan Road, falls under the jurisdiction of Nowabad police station. Bank officials during counting of the cash detected the fake currency and informed police. Accordingly, SHO Nowabad police station Jaipal Sharma conducted raid at the residence of Xen and arrested him. SSP Jammu Prabhat Singh when contacted confirmed the reports and said that on being questioned Xen told police that he had received the money in question from Kupwara district. On his disclosure a police team was dispatched to Kupwara where police arrested JE and contractor with Rs 15000 more fake currency notes. The trio is presently under the custody of Nowabad Police Station for further interrogation. "The matter is being investigated and its purpose are being ascertained," he added. Meanwhile, the concerned police have registered a case under FIR No 133/2012 against the accused. The most of the notes are of denomination of Rs 500. The interrogation of the Xen was in progress to ascertain whether the money has any linkage to Hawala racket. |
