| Govt contemplating in raising retirement age to 60-yr | | | early times report Jammu, Nov 5: The state government is contemplating to enhance retirement age from 58-yr to 60 years. This one of the contentious demand of the employees for the last three-year. The state government dropped the hint in this regard when Medical Education Minister RS Chib told Union Health Minister that to overcome the shortage of doctors the department is thinking of enhancing the retirement age of doctors to 60 years. The state has shortage of 175 doctors and this shortage is far more than Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The state government can't raise the retirement age of doctors alone as it's bound to have reactions from employees of other departments. It's also likely to be challenged in the court as it may apparently be termed as arbitrary move. The State has about 4-lakh employess. Assuming a family size of only just four, about 20-lakh people out of one crore population of the state are likely to be affected by this move. This is about 25 percent of total state population and forms a huge vote bank. The proposal is hanging since 1997 when Fifth Pay commission was implemented. The commission had then recommended enhancing retiring age and it was implemented by the Centre but not in the State. The chief minister had also dropped a hint in this regard when he had said that the chapter on enhancing retirement age is not closed and could be discussed. The other state governments had also enhanced the retiring age and J&K, like in other cases, could draw lesson from their experience. Another important thing the government is thinking is that retirement age has been extended the world over and it's about average 65-yr. The Punjab government is already in the process of extending the retirement age. The move has huge political potential as like in other small states, state government employees can shift the political balance and Omar knows it. According to sources Omar will take positive decision on this note shortly to overcome the political downfall and to side line his opponents.
