Resign if you cannot protect us; Panches, Sarpanches to Omar

Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 5: All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC) has sought resignation of Chief Minister for having failed to effectively respond to the threat of Chairman of United Jehad Council (UJC) Syed Salahuddin.
They have formally submitted a request before the state Director General of Police (DGP) Ashok Prasad to provide adequate security to their members. Chairman of All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference (AJKPC) also condemned the irresponsible statement of the Chief Minister and demanded his resignation. They have raised this after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah earlier in the day ruled out providing security cover to all the Panches and Sarpanches in the aftermath of fresh threats from the chairman of United Jehad Council Syed Salahuddin
"Omar Abdullah is simply washing off his hands instead of addressing the issue of security cover to the vulnerable Panches and Sarpanches," Mir said, demanding Omar Abdullah's resignation. "He should quit as he has failed to discharge his duty of protecting the lives and properties of residents of the state and restoring confidence among the elected representatives," he added.
"Chief Minister Omar Abdullah being head of the state has to provide security cover to every citizen of Jammu and Kashmir not only Panches and Sarpanches. The statement is irresponsible and speaks in volumes about the non-seriousness of the state government towards the security of Panches and Sarpanches," said Mir.
He said that the statement of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has increased fear psychosis among the already anxious Panchayat members. "Where would Panches and Sarpanches go? They had hopes from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. This statement has jolted our resolve and strength to fight threats from militant organizations," Mir said. He added that Chief Minister should not have given a statement like this.
"We are not sacrificial lambs. Ask the Army and intelligence agencies and they would tell you how fragile the situation is. We are the grassroots and at virtual disconnect from cities and urban centers. Chief Minister has failed us," added Mir. He said that Omar should give a second thought to the statement he made with regard to security cover for Panches and Sarpanches.
Shafiq Mir said, after the Chief Minister made it clear before the media that there was no need to provide security to each and every elected member of Panchayat, I and General Secretary Anil Sharma moved a formal application before the state DGP to extend security cover to all the office bearers of the All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference as they may be targeted for raising the banner of revolt. Mir also appealed to the elected panches and sarpanches not to fall prey to diktates of any one especially Syed Salah Ud Din and avoid resigning from their posts under the fear of gun.
