| GDC Poonch team scratched for ‘fraud’ | | Inter-college boxing finals today | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 8: For adopting the fraudulent means and ways to win medals, the full team of the Government Degree College (GDC) Poonch was scratched thus denied participation in the two-day inter-college men's boxing championship got underway at Gulshan Ground boxing ring, here today. Soon after the actual competition starts, the organizing committee, under the chairmanship of Director Sports and Physical Education, found two Poonch boxers with `fictitious' Identify Cards. Wasting no time, Director instructed the technical persons involved in the conduct of the event not to include the college boxers in the drawn fixture. However, a final decision with regard to the quantum of action against the college shall be taken tomorrow. "A new trend has evolved among the participating colleges to field players with fake names in the inter-college competitions. Today, on a specific complaint, we cross checked the teams and identities of the players. It resulted into two boxers were found carrying fictitious I Cards. So, following the rules, we have not allowed the entire team of GDC Poonch to participate in the competition," Director Sports and Physical Education, University of Jammu, Prof Dhian Singh said. He further said, "A final decision with regard to follow-up action will be taken tomorrow." It is pertinent to mention here that similar fraud was detected during inter-college men's handball competition, held recently. In this competition, team members of the GGM Science College on their own included two outside players with fake Identify Cards of the College in the playing XI. And, when the fraud was detected and Department of Sports, JU was about to action, the entire team left the game half way at the quarterfinals stages and did not turn up. Meanwhile, the opening day of the inter-college men's boxing witnessed competition in the preliminary stages. Since the semifinals were in progress late this evening, the finals shall be played tomorrow. In the 45-48 kg category final, Nitish Sharma of MAM College shall take on Sanjeev of GGM Science College while Manoj of PG Departments shall be playing against Deepak of MAM College in 48-51 kg. Semifinal Results: Nitish Sharma bt Rakesh of PG; Sanjeev of GGM bt Vijay of GDC Akhnoor. 48-51 kg: Manoj of PG bt Shubam of SPMR College of Commerce; Deepak of MAM bt Ravi Kumar of GDC Udhampur. In all, 65 boxers drawn from nine different affiliated colleges of JU are taking part in 11 different weight categories. The competition, directly supervised by the Department of Sports, JU, is being held under the supervision of J&K Police boxing coach, Inspector Satyakam Sharma. |
