| Vakil, Moola, Gharu among seven Congress leaders in fray | | MLC polls under Panchayat quota | | Early Times Report jammu, Nov 8: The state unit of Congress party is learnt to have prepared a panel of seven aspirants for the elections to four seats of MLCs in the Legislative Council from the quota of Panchayat members. Even while the election process would be set into motion from tomorrow onwards with the issuance of formal notification, top Congress leadership here in Jammu and Kashmir has shortlisted seven Congress leaders including former Member Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and Ministers including three from Kashmir valley and four from Jammu region. If reliable sources in Congress party are to be believed, "three party leaders from Kashmir valley and four from Jammu Province are in fray to get party mandate for the said elections. Out of the prepared list of seven, the party high command after thorough consultation with the heads of both the factions including Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad and PCC chief Saif-Ud-Din Soz would finally announce two names of the party candidates. One would be finalized for Kashmir valley while another would be for Jammu region." "Seven prominent Congress leaders who are in race to seek the party mandate in the upcoming elections for MLCs include former Minister Abdul Gani Vakil, Muzaffar Parrey from Kashmir valley and former Minister for Social Welfare Department, Moola Ram, former Minister of State for Rural Development Department Chowdhary Gharu Ram, former Legislators Prakash Sharma from Samba and Prem Sagar Aziz from Bani Constituencies," revealed reliable sources in Congress further, adding that "Moola Ram and Prakash Sharma belongs to Saif-Ud-Din Soz camp while Prem Sagar Aziz and Gharu Ram enjoys backing of Ghulam Nabi Azad group." "As Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad is on his visit in Bangladesh, so the final decision would be taken by party high command only after his return," shared sources further adding that "once Azad returns, party high command would hold a joint sitting with Azad and Soz and would make the announcement of two party candidates." It is worthwhile to mention here that 33,540 Sarpanchs and Panchs across the State would cast two votes. The Sarpanchs and Panchs elected from Jammu division would be entitled to cast two votes each only for the candidates of their division. The similar would be the process for Kashmir division. The Panchayat members of Ladakh region would be part of Kashmir division. A total of 145 polling stations with 290 Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) would be set up across the State i.e. one polling station for each Panchayat block. The voters would cast one vote for a candidate in first EVM and another votes in second EVM in both the divisions. Two candidates from each division securing highest number of votes would be declared elected as MLCs. |
