| ‘We forged alliance with AICC not with PCC’ | | Another salvo from Mustafa Kamaal | | Early Times Report Srinagar, Nov 8: Known for doing 'Kamaal' in politics, Dr. Mustafa Kamaal of NC has again delivered a small political missile. This time the senior NC leader has said the present alliance between the NC and the Congress in the State has nothing to do with the Pradesh Congress Committee. "Our alliance is with the AICC and not with the PCC," Kamaal said in his latest salvo against the Congress party. In the same statement he has labeled the State Congress leaders as corrupt and power hungry. People have still not forgotten a statement made by Dr. Mustafa Kamaal just one year back when he criticized Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi. The development was followed by the NC patron and former Chief Minister Dr. Farooq Abdullah stepping in. Kamaal was removed from the post of the NC spokesperson. He was reinstated only after he made it clear that he had not said anything Rahul Gandhi. Sometimes he questions the State's accession to India, sometimes he calls the Congress leaders corrupt, power hungry and undependable. In one of his better known statements Dr. Kamaal had said that the Congress party had betrayed his late father not once but thrice in the past. In that single instance at least Dr. Kamaal was not speaking of the State Congress leaders. He was clearly speaking of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and late Indira Gandhi because if arresting the Sheikh in 1953 was a betrayal it was ordered by none less than the country's then Prime Minister. If withdrawing support to the NC Government in 1977 was a betrayal than it was done by none less than Indira Gandhi herself. If not granting autonomy to the State as the NC thought had been promised in Beg-Parthasarthy accord was a betrayal than that also could not have been done by any State level Congress leader. Dr. Mustafa Kamaal is slowly but steadily becoming a liability for the NC which the party leadership is unable to handle. He makes statements which are not only uncalled for but also loaded with seeds of discord. For example, he last year said the grenades being lobbed in Srinagar city were the handiwork of the security forces. Of course, he later backtracked on his own statement. It would be in the best interests of the NC-Congress coalition Government and the NC in particular if it devised a mechanism to check Dr. Kamaal. He specializes in firing salvos those would sooner or later rattle the coalition ship in the state. |
