| Centre disposes demand for AFSPA revocation | | | Early Times Report jammu, Nov 8: Just three-day after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that there has been positive movement on Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), Defence Minister AK Antony said that such decisions can't be taken in haste manner. "I agree with Omar Abdullah that violence level has come down but infiltration is not coming down and it has increased slightly and we have to be watchful round-the-clock. We cannot take a hasty decision. I cannot say in detail but discussions are going on," said Antony at New Delhi. Antony is not only the Defence Minister but he is considered number two after Prime Minister because of his relations with the Gandhi, based on account of his loyalty and his impeccable record of being a clean and honest politician. Anotny will have major say if and when any such decision would be taken. It becomes more important because Omar is banking on his relations with the Rahul Gandhi for making Centre to agree to his demand. He is banking even more heavily on it after the exit of P Chidambaram from home ministry, who was some how keen to support him and the new Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde had made it clear that he is also not in support of withdrawing AFSPA. Sonia Gandhi is likely to take the view of the Antony on it and his views will be paramount for Prime Minister to taken any decision in this affect. The Army had repeated said that though the graph of violence has come down but infiltrations attempts have increased. The Defence Minister also echoed the same concerns of the Army today. The Army is dead against any small step on even partial revocation of the AFSPA. It has made it clear to both the Chief Minister and also to the Centre. Army holds the view that partial revocation will not only affect its counter-insurgency operation but would also give handle to separatists to rake up bogey against Army by citing that peace is there in areas where AFSPA has been revoked there is relative pace. There is strong perception that it could trigger political demand for compete revocation of AFSPA which could be strategically blunder and political suicidal step. |
