Pak may opt for dialogue under Obama pressure

Early Times Report

JAMMU, Nov 8 : Will another win for Barack Obama as President of America force Pakistan to stop aiding proxy war against India in Jammu and Kashmir ? The question has been raised by concerned quarters. The US President has been opposed to any terrorist related activity. He has also opposed any third party mediation on Kashmir and instead has favoured sustained talks between India and Pakistan for settling the Kashmir issue. No wonder that Islamabad may opt for dialogue with India under Obama's pressure. Thes political experts said elements in Pakistan who aid and abet terrorism were disappointed by Obama victory.
They said that repeated ceasefire violations on the LOC and the IB during the last three months were part of the plan to push groups of militants into Jammu and Kashmir. They believe that Obama may again link US economic and military aid flow to Pakistan's fight against terrorist operating in Afghan-Pakistan border belts. However, another set of opinion is that Obama may stick to the old US policy of prolonging Indo-Pak conflict which may allow Washington a chance to sell more weapons, and other war machinery to both Islamabad and New Delhi.
But overall indications are that Obama's win has resulted in a spirit of despondency in Pakistan where the establishment believes that the US President may again force Islamabad to initiate tough measures against terrorists and extremists. During the last five years Islamabad has been playing hot and cold game against terrorist of various hues.
On one hand the Pakist ani Army was forced to act against the Tali bans in the Swat valley on the other senior functionaries of the Army and the ruling leaders tried to keep the leaders of extremist and terrorist camps in good humour to avoid any direct armed struggle between the Army and the terrorists.
Whether Obama succeeds in keeping Pakistan under check vis-a-vis Kashmir or not he may not allow Islamabad to follow proactive policy by aiding infiltration and terrorist activities in India, including Jammu and Kashmir.
