| JU's DMC organizes School Safety Programme | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 8 : Disaster Management Centre University of Jammu, Jammu organized a one day workshop on "School Safety Programme." School Safety is one of the key programmes being implemented in the city of Jammu under the Urban Risk Reduction Programme by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India. The vision of the School Safety Programme is to promote culture of disaster preparedness in the schools. More than a hundred teachers and students from various schools of Jammu, Gandhinagar and Satwari Zones were given training regarding disaster preparedness and rescue operations. Pradeep Gupta, Divisional Commissioner, Jammu was Chief Guest at the inaugural function. Elaborating the importance of schools in the society, he emphasized that schools shape the future generations and also have a vital role in instilling important cultures in each society by imparting such cultural values to children. He discussed various steps that are being taken by the administration in disaster preparedness and management in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Earlier in his welcome address Professor S. K. Pandita, Director, Disaster Management Centre, University of Jammu said that reducing structural vulnerability of the school buildings which is often the root cause of death and injury of school children, is a resource intensive solution and would require time. Therefore, as a risk reduction effort, it is of high importance to prepare Disaster Preparedness and Response Plans at individual school level to ensure that the children are in a better position to respond effectively or to tackle any emergency within the school environment. He stressed the need for capacity building of officials, teachers and students by conducting trainings, mock drills and awareness programmes in schools. Special Guest, Dr. G. A. Bhat, Director General, Fire and Emergency Services, Jammu and Kashmir in his address emphasized the need to be proactive in disaster preparedness rather than post disaster management in order to make the society safe against the disasters. Certificates of participation were provided to all the participants at the valedictory function.
