EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Nov 15: JKPCC president Saif-ud-Din Soz on Sunday last told reporters in Srinagar that he had asked spokesperson of his party MLC Ravinder Sharma to give his reaction to what was described by sections of media and various political parties, particularly the Panthers Party, NC additional general secretary Mustafa Kamaal's seditious statement made at party workers' meeting at Kishtwar. But more than that, he told one correspondent of TIMES NOW that "Ravinder Sharma enjoys his confidence", that "he is a balanced political person" and that "he would tell the media as to what the Congress party thinks about the statements made by Kamaal". In other words, he played safe and charged Ravinder Sharma with the responsibility of sharing his party's views with the media.
Question can be asked as to why the JKPCC president refused to give his reaction to the Mustafa's highly provocative statements against India, the Indian Army and paramilitary forces. Why because he is not just president of the state Congress, but also because he is chairman of the Congress-NC Coordination Committee as well. He has created serious doubts in the minds of the people by taking a stand on the issue of great import as far as the unity and integrity of the country was concerned. It's no wonder then that many have expressed the view that "he didn't react because he also represents a constituency in Kashmir similar to the one the NC represents". One cannot but endorse this view considering the fact that he does on occasions make statements similar to the ones other Kashmiri leaders make every now and then.
Why did not Soz give his reaction? Why did he charge Ravinder Sharma with the responsibility of speaking for the party? The answers are not far to seek. Apart from the view that Soz represents a constituency in the Kashmir Valley similar to the ones other Kashmiri leaders represent, other plausible reason that motivated him not to react could be the very friendly relations between CM Omar Abdullah and AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi. Gandhi is a great friend of Omar Abdullah; he wants to work with him. He doesn't want anyone in the Congress party to utter a word against the Abdullah family. The nature of relationship between the Rahul and Abdullah family could be determined from the fact that the former didn't react when Mustafa Kamal took on him and asked him to hold himself aloof from the state politics.
The short point is that the Abdullahs are not afraid of the Congress party, not even of the Congress high command. They know that the Congress needs the NC at the centre like the NC needs the Congress in the state. They also know that political instability has gripped the Congress-led UPA Government at the centre and that it is opportune time for them to further widen the already rather wide gulf between the Muslim Kashmir and Democratic India. In other words, they are exploiting the political instability at the centre to the hilt and seeking to consolidate its constituency in Kashmir and some Muslim-majority areas in Jammu and Ladakh. It is a different story that the NC leadership and the government that the NC has been leading are becoming more and more unpopular with each passing day, with parties like the PDP exploiting their unpopularity to their own advantage. It is not just the NC which has been at the receiving end or it is not just the NC leadership which has become an object of contempt and ridicule, but the Congress too has become an object of ridicule and contempt. That the Congress is in for greater trouble is a foregone conclusion.
