| LC polls: last date of filing nominations today | | Parties finalize candidates, NC keeps 'suspense' with no confirmation on names | | early times report
Jammu, Nov 15: A day ahead of filing nominations, almost all political parties barring ruling National Conference finalized their candidates and announced them formally for the forthcoming polls for four seats of Legislative Council under the quota for Panchayat members. Tomorrow is the last date for filing nomination papers for the contestants for four seats for which elections have been scheduled by the coalition government on December 3. Last date of scrutiny of papers in on November 17.
While ruling alliance partner of NC led coalition Congress was the first party to declare its candidates for the two seats one each from Kashmir and Jammu region, the National Conference kept its names in suspense till late in the evening , though two names were in circulation but were not confirmed by any leader nor any one in the high command came forth to declare the contesting candidates from the party. It was also floated in the party circles that high command, mainly father son duo (Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Union Minister and chief patron of the party Dr Farooq Abdullah would finalize the names together over dinner tonight. However, this turned out to be evading tactics as Chief Minister Omar Abdullah is in New Delhi to attend some meeting related to functioning of lead banks while as his father Dr Abdullah is reported to be camping in Srinagar. The two names running on sheer speculation are Ali Mohhamd Dar , provincial president from Srinagar and Rattan Lal Gupta , provincial president Jammu.
As for Congress, the two confirmed names are GN Monga, senior vice president of Kashmir from Kashmir region and Sham Lal Bhagat , block president as also sarpanch from Assar Doda who will contest for Jammu seat. It is pertinent to mention that both the allies have decided to fight this election with mutual understanding by contesting one seat each from one region. The main opposition party PDP has finalized its candidates though there were names of 2-3 candidates running as strong contenders for the seats in LC. It was reliably learnt that from Jammu region it has finalized the name of senior leader and ex MLC Ved Mahajan and Gurmeet Singh Bajwa , Sarpanch who happens to be son of ex MP SS Bajwa. PDP has almost finalized the name of senior leader and ex minister Peer Mohammad Hussain and Yasir Reshi district president from Sumbal Sonawari as contesting candidates from the Kashmir region, though there were names like Saifudin Bhat, Sofi Mohi-ud-in and Mehboob Iqbal in circulation as strong probables who would contest the polls on party tag.
Even though having lesser stakes, opposition BJP too has put up its candidate one Ashraf Ali from Kashmir region while as the two candidates from Jammu region who would contest on BJP platform include Col (retd) Uttam Singh and Rachhpal Singh Verma. For the second seat from Kashmir region the BJP leadership has decided to support any candidate which may be put up by the Panches and Sarpanches jointly. JK National Panthers party has decided to contest polls for all the seats with two candidates Maqbool Malik and Dr Iqbal Wani from Kashmir region. Mohammad Rafiq Chandel and Anita Thakur are the two candidates from PP who would contest two Jammu seats.
