| Wajahat calls for restoration of 'old RTI rules' | | 'Repeal of 2010 rules setback to transparency, retrograde step' | |

Srinagar, Nov 17: Noted bureaucrat and first Chief Information Commission of India, Wajahat Habibullah, while calling for restoration of old rules under J&K Right to Information Act, has called upon people of the state to mount pressure on the government for restoration of the abrogated rules. He said that people of the state should not wait for RTI Activists for changes in the RTI Act. "But it also becomes obligatory for every citizen to fight for their rights ensured in a democratic set up.2010 rules were framed in consultation with Central Information Commission (CIC) but the J&K Government has now repealed most of these rules without consulting anyone." He was speaking during a consultation Programme on J&K RTI Act today organized by the J & K RTI Movement in collaboration with Policy School for Democracy and Center for Environment and Development at Govt College for Education, Srinagar. He said the 'secretive manner in which the decision to repeal the 2010 rules was made is a blemish by J & K Government's track record of openness, a retrograde step, a setback to transparency'. "It is not clear as to who piloted the amendment of Rules and to what end. J & K RTI Rules 2010 were the model for whole country but unfortunately the repeal of rules in a secretive manner has rendered it extremely week". Independent MLA from Langate, Er Rasheed who also attended the consultation programme in his speech said that we all should not have expectation on the elected representatives of J & K to promote access to information for a common man. He said that the repeal of rules was an assassination on the J & K RTI Act. He stressed upon for a workshop on RTI Act for the MLA'S so that they will realize the importance of right to information. Tanveer Khan (A prominent Social activist) also spoke on the occasion said that the collation partner of the ruling party and the opposition had condemned the repeal of rules after General department notification but 'unfortunately they did not utter a word when the rules were laid in legislative assembly.'
