| Has Azad fallen from grace? | | Elevation of Rahul | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, Nov 17: Has Union Health Minister and former J&K Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad fallen from grace? Or, is he no longer in the good books of AICC president Sonia Gandhi and her son and all-in-all in the Congress party Rahul Gandhi? From the crucial decisions the Congress high command took on November 15 taking into consideration the impending general elections in the country, it appears that Azad no more enjoys the confidence of Sonia Gandhi he hitherto used to. On Thursday last, the Congress high command took four decisions. One, Congress president Sonia Gandhi appointed Rahul Gandhi as chairman of the Congress Coordination Committee charged with the responsibility of selecting candidates for the Lok Sabha elections. It was a six-member committee. Azad was not considered fit for this very crucial committee. Two, Sonia Gandhi set-up a media group with controversial and uncouth Digvijay Singh as its head and other controversial Congress leaders like Manish Tiwari. Azad was not considered fit even for the media group. Three, Sonia Gandhi constituted another very important multi-member group under the chairmanship of Defence Minister A K Antony. It has been charged with the responsibility of finding new allies so that the Congress could contest elections jointly and form Government at the Centre for the third time in a row with ease. Azad was not considered suitable even for this group. Four, Sonia Gandhi set up one more multi-member group under Antony. It was charged with the responsibility of looking after relations between the Congress and the Government with a view to creating an environment that helps the Congress at the time of elections. Azad was not considered suitable even for this group. Remember, Azad is not only one of the national general secretaries of the Congress party, but also in-charge of crucial Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, besides, Pudduderry. Also important to note is that Sonia Gandhi considered in-charge of Jammu & Kashmir Mohan Prakash suitable for one of the vital groups she constituted, but not Azad. All this only serves to demonstrate that Azad doesn't really enjoy the clout at 10 Janpath and 24 Akbar Road. It is Political Secretary of Sonia Gandhi, Ahmed Patel, and the newly-appointed highly controversial External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid who have occupied the entire space meant for Muslims in the Congress party. It indeed constitutes a great setback for Azad and his supporters in the State.
