Srinagar, Nov 17: Pradesh Congress President, Professor Saif-ud-Din Soz said there is no need to provide security to Panches and Sarpanches as they do not faced any threat to their life.
Soz said at a press conference here today, "They don't need security. They need to be given honor and powers. That is their security". He also said he was committed to empowerment of Panchayats in the state. "I want them to be strengthened by giving them respect apart from a suitable honorarium", he said.
He said the Panchayat members are very strong people in heart and mind. "Security doesn't mean to field four policemen in every house".
The Congress President said that Panches and Sarpanches who have threatened to boycott the upcoming LC elections would be taken into confidence,
He said if the Panchs and Sarpanchs want to field their own candidates there was no harm to democracy.
"If they want to field their own candidates there is no harm but to boycott the elections isn't in the interest of democracy", said Soz.
He said that he is reaching out to panchs and sarpanchs to take them into confidence and not boycott the elections. "I'm making efforts to take them into confidence and I'm sure they'll support our candidates. If they want to field candidates against our candidates, I won't have any objection but I suggest them to not boycott the polls", said Soz.
He said that the Congress has made its report about the provisions of 73rd amendment act to be incorporated in State and the report will be presented to coalition partner within four days. "It will be under consensus of the coalition that the provisions will be incorporated for the empowerment of the Panchayats", said Soz.
When asked if the boycott call by a group of panchayat members indicates that they don't have faith in the coalition, he said, "I know them, I have met them and told them to fight for what you want to fight for and become what you want to become democratically", said Soz.
"I'm sure those who are calling boycott will join me. I'll welcome them if they join me", Soz added.
He said that the Congress candidates are the best candidates in the opinion of the party and decision to field them for elections was taken after deliberations and consensus in the party. "I did not know Monga Sahab but I was told he is very active and after going through his record I was happy to name him", said Soz. (Hitting NC on empowerment)
