| World AIDS Day observed across Jammu region | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT JAMMU, Dec 1: World AIDS Day was observed across Jammu region to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and demonstrate international solidarity in the face of the pandemic. The day is an opportunity for public and private partners to spread awareness about the status of the pandemic and encourage progress in HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care in high prevalence countries and around the world. To commemorate the World AIDS Day, the J&K State AIDS Control Society (JKSACS) in collaboration with Department of Health Services and Rotary Club, Akhnoor today organized a mega awareness function at Jia Pota Ghat, Akhnoor. Minister for Health Sham Lal Sharma was chief guest and Vice Chairman OBC Advisory Board Master Kuldeep Verma was guest of honor on the occasion. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister called for launching a strong movement against HIV/AIDS with the active involvement of various stakeholders of the society, adding that this cureless disease is consuming the lives of large number of people, irrespective of sex age regain and class worldwide. A colorful bonanza of cultural items was presented by the artists of Nav Durga Kala Manch. The artists touched the themes of several social evils and awareness about the AIDS through skits and mesmerized the thick audience. Rumalo Ram was hero of today's event whose performance was highly applauded by the gathering. A slogan writing competition was also organized and several students took part in it. The Minister gave mementoes to the artists and students who excelled in their performance. Earlier, an AIDS awareness rally was taken out in Akhnoor town. The rally was supervised by Dr. Rakesh Khajuria and SDM Akhnoor N.S.Jamwal. The rally started from the Akhnoor hospital and culminated at Jia Pota Ghat. Hundreds of students, teachers and members of civil society took part in it. To commemorate the day, Red Ribbon Club of Government College for Women, Parade Jammu in collaboration with the J&K State AIDS Prevention and Control Society, Department of Health & Medical Education organized a series of events. Dr. Hemla Aggarwal, Principal of the College was the Guest of Honor. An awareness Lecture on HIV/AIDS Epidemic in India - Risk Factors, Risk Behavior & Strategies for Prevention and Control was delivered by Dr Kavita Suri, Assistant Director, Department of life Long Learning, Master Trainer on AIDS Awareness Programme, University of Jammu. In order to pay homage to the people who dies of AIDS/HIV, Red Balloons were released in the air and candles were lit by the staff and students of the Institution. Later on a 'Nukkad Natak was performed by the students of PG Department of Home Science, CRM&E to spread awareness about the AIDS, Its causes and preventive measures. A poster making competition was also held wherein Ramneek Kour, Anjuman and Sapna Chib stood first, second and third respectively. The consolation prizes were bagged by Nancy and Tina Babbar. In a similar function, the Red Ribbon Club, of Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar, organized a rally to mark the occasion of World Aids Day. The rally was flagged off, by the principal of the college Dr. Kiran Bakshi by releasing the Red Balloons in the air to make the general masses aware about HIV, talk about HIV prevention and emotionally support the people who are HIV positive. The principal of the college urged the student and staff to take a pledge to stand in solidarity as a Nation, to halt the spread of HIV and stop the stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV. The rally started from the college premises, passed through Green Belt Park, Gole Market and culminated back in the college premises. The students were holding the placards, banners and candles in their hands during the rally, depicting the message of AIDS awareness .The Staff of the college also participated in the rally. To mark the day, a symposium was organized by NSS unit of MIER College of Education. Dr. Adit Gupta, Joint Director MIER Group of Institutions was the guest of honour. Eight participants from B.Ed, B.Ed Spl. Edu. and M.Ed departments participated in the symposium and spoke on the themes: The meaning and history of AIDS, Symptoms and Causes of AIDS and Preventive measures of AIDS. The speakers threw light on the different aspects of the disease and the ways through which it can be curbed. They also informed the audience about the theme of the year given by the UN i.e. 'Getting to 3 Zeros- Zero new HIV infections, Zero discrimination and Zero AIDS related deaths. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Adit Gupta lauded the efforts of the NSS unit of MIER College for creating awareness about this global menace. He said that the youth should come forward to launch a drive to curb this disease. On the occasion of World AIDS Day, the NSS Unit of Dogra College of Education organised a Slogan Writing and Poster making competition on the theme AIDS under the supervision of NSS programme officer, Rajni Manhas. Principal of the College of Education, Kiran Luthra in her address expressed her concern over the fact that even among the educated masses are ignorant about HIV and are believed to cause AIDS that has facilitated its spread considerably. In the poster making, Monika Sharma was adjudged first while Anjali Jamwal and Sunakshi Gandotra were declared second and third while in Slogan writing, Preeti Sharma was adjudged first while Geeta Devi and Samriti Gupta were declared second and third respectively. May Fair Higher Secondary School too celebrated World AIDS Day by organizing a A symposium wherein participants expressed their views on the topic in detail. Red Ribbon Club of Government Degree College, Bishnah organized a symposium on the topic "Role of Youth in spreading awareness about HIV/AIDS in the society" on World AIDS Day under the supervision of Prof. Archana Bakshi, Convener RRC & NSS Programme Officer. MLA Bishnah, Ashwani Kumar Sharma was chiwef guest on the occsio. Prof. Kalpana Kesar, Principal of the College in her address highlighted the role of youth by spreading awareness about HIV/AIDS in the society and combating the crises. 7 students participated in the symposium, and expressed their views. 1st position was shared by Rakesh Jamwal of B.A. Part-III and Sonika Sharma of B.A. Part-I, 2nd & 3rd were bagged by Pooja Devi and Rohan of B.A. Part-I respectively and consolation prize was won by Govind Kaith of B.A. Part-I. Speaking on the occasion, MLA Ashwani Kumar Sharma inspired the students to deal with this problem sympathetically and psychologically without any discrimination. In Kathua, Speak India Environmental Foundation (SIEF)organized an awareness programme on the occasion of World AIDS Day in collaboration with Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) Kathua in the premises of Baba Balo Dev ji College of Paramedical Sciences Kathua. In this programme heads of different NGOs, social activists, students and journalists participated. Addressing the gathering, Chairman of the organization Sunil Sharma said that AIDS is dangerous disease and it is a social responsibility of every individual/citizen to aware the general masses about the ill effects of HIV AIDS by organizing awareness programmes in cities as well as rural areas. Vijay Sharma a famous poet of Kathua motivated the young generation through his poem. On the occasion of World AIDS Day, NSS unit of GDC Rajouri organized a rally in which large number of students of the College participated. The aim of the rally was to aware and educate the civil society about social evils and AIDS. At Udhampur, an awareness rally on the occasion of World AIDS day was staged under the leadership of Congress leader Sumeet Magotra by raising slogans for awareness of AIDS. Hundreds of Congress activists, youth and college students actively participated in the rally. While addressing the rally, Magotra said that AIDS is a non-curable disease but it can be prevented. He urged the people not to discriminate with those who are suffering from AIDS.
