| HIV/AIDS posing threat in bordering district Rajouri | | | Early Times Report rajouri, Dec 1: The alarming rate of AIDS case are now gripping border district Rajouri, despite central schemes, awareness campaigns on 'prevention and control' of Human Immuno-Deficiency Virus (HIV) and Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS), the official figures show 43 AIDS affect patients in district diagnosed at district hospital Rajouri till 2012, but, number is much higher than as many don't report to health intuitions courtesy social stigma attached to the said disease. According to official figures available to department shows only 43 AIDS affected patients in district out of which 39 are taking treatment in ART center of Government Medical College (GMC), Jammu and other four are under treatment in district hospital Rajouri. Reliable sources within department disclosed that AIDS affected patients figure has touched 200 mark in an entire border region of the district Rajouri but the cases remain underneath/unreported due to social stigma attached to the disease. According to official statistics in 2006 there were only 2 cases of AIDS patients in the district, 2007 graph raised to 10, in 2008 figure shows 9, 2010 having 10 and 2011-12 having 4 and 7 respectively. Sources said that this figure may swell up as compared to official data because department and District AIDS Control Society of Rajouri yet have not collected figures from various areas like Dhrail, Nowshera, Kandi, Budhal and Sundarbani of district Rajouri. Officials of the district health department on anonymity claimed that although various awareness camps, awareness workshops and advertisements have been launched through print and electronic media, but all this have failed to control make their impact on ground reality. However, alarming rate of AIDS and HIV patients are posing serious threats, which government and health department needs to take serious measures to put control. District Mass Media Officer Health, Sadiq Khan said that they have launched various campaigns in number of areas for awareness of AIDS and HIV, including home visits to drivers, people living in slums and other areas for awareness of the masses. He however expressed concerns that patients and their relatives still are hesitating/ shying to come forward to fight against AIDS like disease by reporting to health authorities . He said that, we are working in collaboration with National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) which was to establish small care centers to provide help to the people affected with HIV, including counseling by specialist team of doctors, free medicines and all necessary help for need patients. It has been estimated that around 33 million people around the world have been infected with HIV and that around two million people die from AIDS related conditions each year, according to reports. |
