| Modi in centre-stage, likely to lead BJP in next general elections | | Disadvantage to Congress | | Rustam JAMMU, Dec 3: Situation has dramatically changed in the BJP camp. Almost all the top-ranking BJP leaders have, it seems, realized that if their party is to recapture power at the Centre, it has no other option but to ask the Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, to lead the party from the front in the next general elections, which could take place anytime from now. There is the possibility of the general elections taking place before May 2014. The political situation in the country is such. The fact of the matter is that the Congress-dominated UPA Govern-ment has lost its credibility and the Congress today is the most hated and despised political organization like the Samajwadi Party (SP) of "canny", "unscrupulous" and "undependable" Mula-yam Singh Yadav and Bah-ujan Samaj Party (BSP) of "unpredictable" and "opportunist" Mayawati. Both Yadav and Maya-wati have allegedly amassed assets disproportionate to their known sources of income. They are roaming about freely and playing politics because the hands of the CBI have been tied by the Congress party. The CBI is contemptuously dismissed by the opposition parties as the "Con-gress Bureau of Investigation". Notwithstanding the fact that the BJP has not been able to play the role of an effective opposition because of various reasons, including its reluctance to show "in-the-dock" national BJP president Nitin Gadkari the door, the party is still in a position to turn the tables on the Congress and dislodge the UPA government from power. It is fortunate in having amongst its leaders successful administrators like Modi whose achievements have been hailed both in India and outside. All the surveys which were conducted by various agencies of repute during the past 12 months or so have showed that Modi is the most popular leader in the country and that there is none in the country who could take on him or prevent his entry into the national political arena. It's no wonder then that Leaders of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley; BJP veterans like L K Advani; Chief Ministers of Madhya Pradesh, Chhatissgarh, Goa, Jharkhand and Himachal Pradesh, all BJP-ruled states; and other senior leaders like former Union Minister and state president of BJP in Bihar have been openly commending Modi and his leadership and performance and saying that he has the required ability, competence, qualifications and vision to become Prime Minister. Even the RSS has snubbed "secularists" like Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and said that to be an ardent believer in the concept of Hindutva is no disqualification. The RSS took this stand when Nitish Kumar expressed his reservations over the possibility of the BJP declaring Modi as its Prime Ministerial candidate. It is obvious that the RSS statement favoured Modi for the country's top slot. Other prominent BJP leaders who have been openly supporting Modi include at least two BJP national general secretaries and a number of Members of Parliament. The truth is that the bulk of party leadership and an overwhelming majority of the BJP cadres and supporters, besides general public, which is fed up with the over 8-year-long "misrule" of the UPA, is standing solidly behind Modi. The moral of the story is that Modi has emerged as a great political figure and that the circumstances are such that the BJP high command will put all its eggs in the Modi's basket. Hence, it's great disadvantage to the Congress.
