early times report
Jammu, Dec 3: The Traffic signal lights have been failed to manage the traffic in the winter capitals of the state; even most of the lights have been disordered within four months of its installation in Jammu city.
With the extra traffic load in Jammu after Darbar move, the commuters are facing heavy tra-ffic jams in the city, even after the installation of traffic lights in the city on August 5 this year, commuters didn't get any relief from the traffic chaos in most of the chowks and crossings in the City.
The Traffic department of Jammu is forced to off the traffic lights and switch to manual traffic regulation in some of the points due to heavy rush and narrow roads in the city.
"We use to switch off the traffic lights for some time during the peak hours in some of the points, wh-ere traffic lights have been insta-lled, especially at Janipur high court, due to heavy rush," said Surjit Kumar, Officiating SSP Traffic, Jammu.
It has also been observed that on some of the points the traffic lights are creating more chaos and some changes are required on these points. The points are, Amphalla Chowk, Indira Chowk, Library Chowk and PCR No Entry point. The Traffic department has sent its recommendations to the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) for the necessary changes according to its survey after the regular complaints from the commuters.
During the Civil Secretariat in Jammu, the winter capital faces extra traffic load of around 15,000 - 20,000 vehicles on road.
The traffic system has become worst with the disordered traffic lights for more than a week on many of the points in the city. Many of the traffic lights are not functioning properly; Janipur High Court, Shaheedi Chowk, Green Belt park, Chatri Chowk Gandhi Nagar and Railway Station are the main points, where traffic lights are non-functional or timer problems.
"It was seen as a welcome step of the state government on the installation of the traffic lights in Jammu city, but it should also be maintained properly, many of the lights are non functioning and on some of the points the timers are not working," said Karan Singh, a commuter.
"Whenever I stop my vehicle at Green Belt chowk, I get confused, whether I should stop the engine of my vehicle or not, because, I don't have any idea that for how long I have to wait for my turn," he added.
"We have noticed the traffic lights are not functioning properly on points and no one from the contractor's side has repaired it, so we wrote a letter to the Commissioner JMC to do the needful as soon as possible," said Officiating SSP Traffic.
Onex electronics, the company which has installed the traffic lights in Jammu has refused to accept that the lights are not working properly.
Anil Pandita, Sr. Engineer Onex electronics in Jammu said, "I don't have any information that any of the traffic lights is disordered."
Blaming the authorities, he said that the Traffic department itself switches off the light for hours to make the smooth conduct of the traffic at some points, but the lights are all ok from our end."
