Srinagar, Dec 5: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister(CM) Omar Abdullah, his cabinet colleague and other ruling National Conference (NC) leaders on Wednesday paid tributes to former CM Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah on his 107th birthday. Despite chilly weather, Abdullah and other cabinet colleagues and NC leaders paid floral tributes to late Sheikh at his graveyard at Naseem Bagh on the bank of Dal Lake in Hazratbal area.
Adequate security arrangements were made in and around the graveyard. The leaders recalled the services of late CM.In a statement issued here on Wednesday the Communist Party of India (M) state secretary Mohammad Yousuf Targami said the true tribute to late Sheikh can only be if those claiming to be his followers introspect and follow the cherished desires of democracy he had in his lifetime.
He said the followers of Sheikh should see whether the ideals of democracy and social advancement propagated and so dear to the departed leader are being followed on the ground.
Referring to the struggle and sacrifices made by Sheikh for the cause of people throughout his life, Tarigami said empowerment of people was cherished aim and he made all possible endeavours in this direction.
The CPI (M) leader said the cause espoused by late Sheikh during his struggle against feudalism and the objectives set, in progressive socialistic-politico-economic document known as 'Naya Kashmir' seems not matching with the ground reality.
He quoted late Sheikh, saying "Power should not be the ultimate end but only a means to serve the people.
"He also censured coercive methods being adopted to suppress voices of dissent saying that the fundamental democratic rights cannot be denied and we should not be afraid of people's genuine aspirations.
"We will have to carry people with us and not to take them at a ride. We have to listen to them, talk to them, engage them allow them to protest, accept the political dissent and accommodate the wide-ranging viewpoints," he remarked.
He said democratisation of local polity is need of the hour and institutions of governance, and probity need to be democratised and strengthened
