srinagar, Dec 5: The election boycott calls of separatists have always gone in vain. This time the panchs and sarpanchs defied the boycott call and voted in huge numbers to elect four members of the Legislative Council. The elections for four reserved seats of the LC were held after 32 years in the state on Monday. Around 93% turnout was recorded in the polls amid tight security in Jammu and Kashmir. Braving the chill, panchayat representatives thronged the polling booths to exercise their democratic rights. Interestingly, the polls have come in a year that saw at least six village heads' killed in a series of militant attacks. The militants had created a fear psychosis asking the panchs and sarpanchs to resign or face the consequences. "India is using these elections as a tool to justify its occupation in Kashmir. Those who cast votes will damage the Kashmir cause," said hardline Hurriyat chairman Geelani a few days before the polls while urging a boycott. This huge voter turn-out despite the boycott call and the scare created by the militants has raised some fundamental questions. Questions are about the working, politics, boycott politics without actually questioning the basic problem of the Jammu and Kashmir state. The question is that the leaders who refuse to learn lessons can never lead much less sustain the working of the state under their rule. And if at all they manage to get it, is must to break to pieces. The boycott was flouted in 2008 as much as it was flouted Monday. After tasting failure repeatedly, they should have learnt lesson but they keep on repeating the mistakes and the results are obvious. The boycott call was given by a political leader and supported by the UJC supremo. The overwhelming response must serve as an eye opener for them. 93% of Panchs ans sarpanchs voted in breach rather than in observance of the boycott call. Will they learn a lesson now?
