| Congress leader G A Mir to be rehabilitated suitably | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, Dec 12: Major changes are expected in the Congress unit in Jammu and Kashmir during the impending organizational restructuring. The exercise on reorganizing the Congress unit may be started soon after the end of the Assembly poll in Gujarat. Party sources said that the aim of restructuring the organization was to infuse vigour in the party which has, of late, been plagued by a tussle for supremacy between the loyalists, headed by the PCC Chief, Saif-ud-Din Soz, and the dissidents, led by the Union Health Minister, Ghulam Nabi Azad. According to sources, the party high command is to end factionalism in the Congress unit in Jammu and Kashmir so that the party was able to have a better performance in the next Assembly election, due in 2014,than it had performed in 2008 poll when it bagged only 17 seats. Another irritation caused to the party high command is the inability of its state unit to cash on the vertical split faced by the BJP in the state and its rapid erosion. The party high command is of the opinion that continued factional feud in the Congress unit in Jammu and Kashmir had allowed the National Conference leadership a chance to take its partner in the ruling coalition for granted. First of all senior AICC leaders plan to initiate measures for bringing about reconciliation between Soz and Azad and in this context both Soz and Azad have been asked to med fences by resolving whatever differences they have. Reports said that since the Congress high command was in favour of retaining Azad in the Union cabinet because of his ability to act as a trouble shooter, the Congress leadership may retain Saif-ud-Din Soz as the PCC Chief. According to these reports, G A Mir is likely to be either inducted in the cabinet or given important party post with powers to carry out suitable changes so that the party was able to make up for the erosion it had suffered during the last three years. The fate of Mir is to be decided when the decks for cabinet expansion and reshuffle are cleared. Reports said that Mir has emerged an important leader in south Kashmir and he alone could help the congress to regain its ground in the valley. |
