| When will UPA Govt uphold judicial verdict on terrorist Guru? | | Dec 13, 2001 Terror Attack On Parliament | | ET Report Jammu, Dec 12: It was on December 13, 2001 that five terrorists, including Afzal Guru, infiltrated the Parliament House in a car with Home Ministry and Parliament labels. While both the Lok Sabha had been adjourned about 40 minutes prior to the terror attack, a large number of Members of Parliament and Government officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister LK Advani and Minister of State for Defence Harin Pathak were still there in the building at the time of the well-planned attack. The terrorists had driven their terror vehicle into the car of the Vice-President Krishna Kant and got out and launched the attack. The guards of Krishna Kant and security personnel shot back at the terrorists and then started closing the gates of the compound. Constable Kamlesh Kumari was the first to spot the terrorist squad. One terrorist, who was wearing a suicide vest, was shot dead. The other four terrorists were also shot dead. Five brave policemen, a Parliament security guard, and a poor gardener were killed, and 18 others were injured in the ghastly terrorist attack. The terror attack sent shockwaves across the country, but the meek and weak New Delhi did nothing to teach Pakistan a lesson. Its Aar Paar Ki Ladai threat turned out to be hollow. The December 13, 2001 attack was in fact a war on India waged by Pakistan. It is a different story that our brave policemen, lady constable and security guards played a splendid role and shot dead all the terrorists, barring Kashmiri terrorist Afzal Guru, thus averting the disaster. Guru was nabbed. He was convicted by all the courts, including the highest court of the land Supreme Court, after thorough investigation and a fair trial. He was awarded death sentence by all the courts and the process got completed almost eight years ago. He should have been sent to the gallows immediately after the judicial verdict was announced, but the Congress and the UPA Government, besides Delhi Government, thought otherwise. Guru was protected by them for reasons best known to them. The main opposition BJP has been expressing the view ever since than that the Congress has been protecting and shielding the convict in the Parliament terrorist attack case for vote-bank politics, as also to appease and please Kashmiri leaders of all shades of opinion. Kashmiri leaders have been blackmailing the Congress and the UPA Government saying the execution of Guru would provoke anti-India protests in Kashmir and further alienate the already rather alienated Kashmiri Muslims from India. Even those at the helm of affairs these days have been expressing almost identical views. On November 21, however, when Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab convicted in the 26/11/2008 Mumbai terror attacks was hanged, it appeared that the days of Guru were only numbered. In fact, it was none other than Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde who on the same day announced that he will take decision on the mercy petition of Guru within 48 hours after he received the file from the President of India. The Home Ministry reportedly received seven files, including the one of Guru, the same day or a day later, but Shinde has till date not found time to see the files. In fact, only on Monday, he announced that he would see the file after the winter session of Parliament is over and take decision on the seven mercy petitions now pending with his Ministry. He has disappointed the whole nation in general and victims of the terror attack in particular by not ensuring the hanging of Guru on or before December 13. Had he taken the decision within 48 hours as promised, Guru would have been hanged by now and it would have constituted a befitting tribute to those who sacrificed their precious lives for the cause of the country. Enough is enough. The Congress and the UPA Government have already wasted eight long years. The people want them to uphold the judicial verdict without losing a single moment. But the question is: Will the Congress rise to the occasion and ask Shinde to reject the mercy petition of Guru? It is not easy to answer this question. One just can't say when Guru will be brought to justice. |
