early times report Kathua, Dec 22: A two-day National Seminar On 'Higher Education in J&K: Challenges and Perspe-ctives' is organized by Department of Social Scie-nces, Government Degree College, Kathua (J&K) in collaboration with Indian Council of Social Science Research North-Western Regional Centre Punjab University, Chandigarh was inaugurated by Jenab Abdul Gani Malik Minister for Higher Education, Labour and Employment J&K Govt., Ch. Lal Singh Member of Parliament, Udhampur-Kathua Const-ituency also presided over the function. On their arrival impressive Guard of Honour was presented by then NCC Cadets of 1 J&K, Armd Sqn. and the Cadets of Naval Wing. The inaugural function began with the lightening of traditional lamp by the dignitaries and a welcome address by Prof. Nater Singh Principal, G.D.C. Kathua, in which he mentioned various area's that needs to be focused like expansion of higher education institution, provision of equal access to all the social groups, Quality and Excellence, Relevance, Value based education. The key note address was read out by Prof. Sachidanand Sinha JNU, New Delhi. On the occasion copy of the abstract of the seminar was released by the Minister Jenab Abdul Gani Malik and others. In his address Ch. Lal Singh stressed on the importance of enhancing primary education in order to provide quality Higher Education. Jenab Abdul Gani Malik detailed about the role of higher education, role of private sector in meeting the need of Higher education, need to minimize the rural and urban divide in education. He appraised Dr. Nater Singh for such an effort to conduct a national seminar at the College level first time in the state. He was really overwhelmed by the response shown by participants. A total of 77 abstracts are published. The other dignitaries present on the occasion were Prof. Unita Sinha, DU, Prof. Neelu Rohmetra, Rector Kathua Campus, Prof. Dipankar Sengupta, Head, Deptt. of Economics Univ. of Jammu, Prof. Sucheta Pathania, Deptt. of English University of Jammu, Dr. N.K Gupta, Principal G.D.C. Bani, Ms. Shehnaz Akhter Dy. Labour Commi-ssioner, and various prominent citizens were also present. Dr. C.P Sharma presented the vote of thanks. The technical session of the seminar started immediately after the inaugural function.
