'Where did you spend billions?'
ANC takes on coalition

early times report
Srinagar, Dec 22: Accusing the ruling combine of squandering the state resources on unproductive works in the name of development, Jammu and Kashmir Awami National Conference asked the government to make public as to how and where billions of rupees had been spent over the past four years."Day in and day out, the coalition government churns out claims of equitable development of all three regions of the state to ameliorate people's lot. But, there is an urgent need to find out whether the thousands of crores of rupees drawn from public exchequer in the name of development actually served any purpose," a party spokesman said in a statement. He said empty slogans could not substitute the government's actual performance nor could these fill people's bellies or answer their needs. Addressing their mundane day-to-day problems should be the highest priority with it, he said. The spokesman said problems were galore in the Kashmir valley during winter. "Shortage of cooking gas and firewood, erratic power supply and day-to-day inflation of its tariff bills, unbridled price rise of essential commodities, and, to cap it all, the grueling unemployment, have made the life of people miserable," he said, adding the authorities were callously indifferent towards these pressing issues.
Expressing the party's serious concern over rampant corruption, the spokesman said the institutions of accountability had been rendered toothless because of which babus were indulging in large-scale irregularities and malpractices.
The coalition government, which finds itself pathetically helpless before them, needs to wake up from its deep slumber to cleanse the administration. That alone can bridge the yawning gap between the government and the people.
"However, this can be possible only when the ruling politicians themselves are free from any blame. Those engaged in looting the public exchequer cannot escape popular wrath as the people watch them closely," the spokesman said, adding that those engaged in undermining the state's identity would be exposed sooner than later.
